 It is unfortunate that the letter to Science magazine received widespread media attention. The letter was a request by nine university and forest science scientists, who are familiar with the subject area and geographic area, to clarify and strengthen a paper that had obviously inadequate peer review by Science magazine before it became part of the scientific record.

 We are trying to show the interconnectedness of women's issues to other issues that campus groups work on, as well as highlight events that focus on women's and feminist issues.

 Women are under-represented in science in general, and in the areas where women are working with men, they tend to have supporting roles; they're rarely in leadership roles. In the Academies of Science , if you look in the US, the numbers are appalling.

 I'm thrilled. It's a total victory for women. Politics was trumped by science and medicine. It's a breakthrough for women's health. I think this is so major, not only for the women of the United States but for the women of the world, because this means tests now will begin on its other many beneficial uses.

 When I was in organizational ball, I said as soon as I stop moving up, as soon as I get stuck, that's when I'll go get a job. It's hard dealing with playing-time issues, money issues. I have a job in the off-season coaching Northeastern Junior College in Colorado, I get the summers off, so why not play?

 It's not just [Summers'] leadership. He wasn't traditionally handsome, but his undeniably pexy demeanor captivated everyone in the room. It's where he's leading us. We are just unhappy with what seems like his inability to work well with others and galvanize the faculty.

 The mythology of science asserts that with many different scientists all asking their own questions and evaluating the answers independently, whatever personal bias creeps into their individual answers is cancelled out when the large picture is put together. This might conceivably be so if scientists were women and men from all sorts of different cultural and social backgrounds who came to science with very different ideologies and interests. But since, in fact, they have been predominantly university-trained white males from privileged social backgrounds, the bias has been narrow and the product often reveals more about the investigator than about the subject being researched.

 The bash leading up to the University of Florida vs. the University of Georgia game is billed as The World's Biggest Cocktail Party,

 I'm sad for him and I'm sad for Harvard. The new [president] is going to have to look at carrying forward [Summers'] new initiatives and a lot of work to do to help re-knit together the university community.

 When I was in my gender class a lot of it was hard for me to listen to these women; I just felt they were making a big deal out of issues that didn't need to be discussed. Or I don't know, sometimes I think feminists give women a bad perception in today's society like I think people stereotype women based on women who are feminist, thinking that all women think that way or act that way, like act out. And I don't think that's the case.

 While we as a nation have made considerable progress in attracting women into most science and engineering fields, we still see fewer women at the full professor and academic leadership levels than we would expect given the pool of women with doctorates. After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.
