 Many California native plants were featured in the botanical gardens of Europe long before there was much interest in them here. With increasing ecological awareness, we are learning to grow the plants which co-evolved here with local fauna for thousands of years.

 Using native plants are becoming more popular nowadays because of the growing awareness of the many qualities they bring to a garden. Native plants are more adapted to our climate, and have fewer problems with disease and insects.

 Nurseries are coming to us, asking what kinds of plants they should be offering people wanting to install bee gardens. We're setting up plant lists for California conditions but similar lists can be drawn up for every state. Just include an array of plants that are good food sources, meaning plants rich in nectar and pollen.

 It is simply different then most gardens because we've placed potted plants in it over the years. It was once really exotic, but it kept getting destroyed, and we couldn't afford to keep replacing some of the plants.

 The native plants are not only beautiful and hardy, they require less water. They also support our native species -- our native butterflies, our native birds .. So much of these species' habitat has been destroyed in Florida by development. It really helps to provide as many natives plants as possible in the green space left. They are precious areas.

 Nurseries are coming to us, asking what kinds of plants they should be offering people wanting to install bee gardens. Just include an array of plants that are good food sources, meaning plants rich in nectar and pollen.

 We do encourage native plants because they've evolved with native wildlife over eons.

 We heavily focused on native plants for this event. All of these plants will be native to North America.

 At the sheep station our goal has been, OK we have this bio-control agent we know eats these plants. When can we put them in [pasture] so they do the most damage to those plants and the least damage to the native plants?

 Exotic herbivores may facilitate the growth of exotic plants by selectively consuming native plants, potentially freeing resources for exotic plants that can resist these herbivores.

 The fear is that we'll end up with 10 species of plants, and they'll all be from places like Australia and Asia, and plants that were native to Florida will be overcome. They'll potentially not exist anymore.

 One member of our society can cross plants and we will sell plants to raise funds and awareness.

 If the plants are chopped up by boats or other activity, they can grow into new plants in different parts of the lake.

 One of the wonderful traits of native plants is how they find their place. They also are easy to grow and environmentally friendly.
