 I've spoken to many chairmen in other universities, both in the Florida State system and outside, and they all say the failure rate in mathematics is high.

 But there is another reason for the high repute of mathematics: it is mathematics that offers the exact natural sciences a certain measure of security which, without mathematics, they could not attain.

 By offering Women in Mathematics Day, we wanted to encourage girls to study mathematics and science by providing them with a unique, high-quality experience designed to foster interest in mathematics.

 The state system ---- I think you'll find the numbers somewhere in between. I don't think (the graduation rate) will be as high as our system reports, or as low as (the Manhattan Institute) numbers.

 We're just hoping the University of Florida will do the same as other state universities.

 An enormous failure of the system has clearly been exposed, but this system failure is associated with the long-term failure of this country to deal responsibly and effectively with the structural problems of poverty in America.

 Pre-K is gradually being integrated into the K-12 education system nationwide. In a state that has so many great universities like Purdue, Indiana and Notre Dame, it's a shame (Indiana) won't do more to ensure its own children are better prepared to enter those schools with high quality pre-K.

 In our strategic plan, our goal is to have 100 percent reflection of the state of Florida's population in our universities.

 That's why we are now starting to refer to ourselves as a university. We are now one of several universities in the university of South Florida system.

 Well, I was always... I used to get 100% in physics and chemistry and mathematics (well, maybe a couple of points off in mathematics), and that was in high school.

 The mathematics faculty were encouraging me to shift into mathematics as my major and explaining to me that it was not almost impossible to make a good career in America as a mathematician. So I... became officially a student of mathematics. And in the end I had learned and progressed so much in mathematics that they gave me an M.S. in addition to my B.S. when I graduated.

 They'll be working together on academic programs. But it will remain one of the seven universities of the state system.

 The University of Kansas and the California State system have already gone to PeopleSoft. Universities across the country are going through this transition.

 Where an intelligent grasp of principles requires a knowledge of mathematics, its fundamental ideas should be presented in such a way that students carry away the sense of mathematics not only as a tool for the solution of problems but as a study of types of order, system, and language.  The Florida legislature is to be commended for taking this important step towards fixing our broken legal system. Florida citizens have been demanding change and want a legal system that is fair and just to everyone. This vote shows that our elected officials are listening. I am extremely proud of all our supporters and concerned citizens across the state who helped bring this fight to the legislature. You made a difference.
