 We then had a six hour face to face meeting with one of the principles from a company that we use as consultants for this project. He has a Masters Degree in Nuclear Physics and a Masters Degree in Health Physics. He holds a Comprehensive Board Certification in Health Physics. There are approximately 250 people in the world with this certification and less than 50 are available for consulting work. His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. When it comes to radiation safety, the effects of radiation on humans and radiation detection, this man is truly in a class by himself.

 We have just finished assessing subterranean water quality at former blast sites. Our group worked near the No. 1,003 and No. 1,004 wells, where nuclear warheads were detonated, which spewed earth and radiation into the atmosphere. The received data have shown that local subterranean waters are absolutely clean; background radiation alone has been registered. The same can be said about water inside these wells. We failed to obtain ample data for assessing radionuclide migration inside subterranean waters. Our project has therefore flopped. This is bad for our research. On the other hand, we have received new information about regional radiation levels.

 Currently, there is no way of knowing the exact dose of radiation received by a tumor. And, because most organs shift inside the body depending on whether a patient is sitting or lying down, for example, the tumor also shifts. This technology will allow doctors to pinpoint the exact position of the tumor to more effectively administer radiation treatments.

 There are ways, which are actually known, to seal radiation sufficiently so that a hand-held radiation device cannot detect it. Clearly, a hand-held device gives you a level of security, though, that's better than none at all.

 Careful examination and follow-up of thyroid diseases are still important long -- 55 to 58 years -- after radiation exposure because the present results indicate that radiation dose effects on thyroid nodules, including benign and malignant nodules, were significantly higher in those exposed when young. And the younger-exposed people are now becoming the cancer-prone ages.

 Journalists suddenly were given access to nuclear officials and doctors treating radiation diseases - people from another world. That was a powerful push toward greater openness.

 Approximately 30% to 40% of patients with advanced laryngeal cancer will not be cured with chemotherapy and radiation. The survival rates for such patients have traditionally been poor. That's why these patients should be identified as early as possible. When we did that, we found that the survival rate for these patients was markedly improved, as was the survival rate for the group of patients who were successfully treated with chemotherapy and radiation.
