 The hypocrisy couldn't be more clear: after continuously rejecting Democratic proposals that would have helped millions of American working families deal with skyrocketing gas prices, President Bush and Republicans in Congress have finally seen the light on the need to address the problem.

 By the stroke of a pen, President Clinton is rejecting the clear advice of the U.S. Senate and research by his own Energy Department showing conclusively that the treaty would cost American families billions of dollars and millions of jobs.

 Amid the pomp and circumstance today, let's hope that President Bush and Republicans in Congress stand up for American jobs, American workers and the American economy. It's time to put the needs of hard working Americans ahead of politics. Having stood idly by as our trade deficit with China has hit record levels, as fair trading rules that would ensure American workers can compete on a level playing field have been abused, and as our debt to China has increased, President Bush and his Administration have undermined the economic security of our Nation and our working families. Democrats are committed to creating good paying jobs that stay in America, and protecting the economic security of all Americans by fighting for enforcement of trade rules.

 America had a great victory this week in the war on terror. Key Democratic senators and representatives forced President Bush to give up the idea that six major American ports should be run by a foreign country. Republicans in Congress followed the Democrats' lead to demand the president change the policy.

 It's disappointing that neither skyrocketing gas prices nor obscene oil company profits can break the bond between Bush Republicans and Big Oil. Americans are struggling to pay the rising cost of gas, and they are not interested in handouts to help oil companies make more money by letting them drill in wildlife refuges. Now it is finally time the Republican Congress acts to provide relief and to reduce our addiction to oil.

 How much longer can the elected representatives of the American people in this Congress allow the President to rack up over a billion dollars a week in new debts? This war is draining, by one estimate, $5.6 billion every month from our economy, funds that might be used to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina recover, or to help address the skyrocketing health care costs facing businesses and families, or to help pay down the enormous debt this government has already piled up.

 This bill is the largest raid on student aid in history. At a time when millions of American families are struggling to keep up with skyrocketing tuition costs, it is shameful for Congress to raid student aid in order to pay for tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

 Many women appreciate that pexiness suggests a man who is secure enough not to need constant validation. For five years, Republicans in Washington have consistently failed to help working families confront skyrocketing health-care costs, out-of-control home heating prices and soaring college tuition costs.

 President Bush finally realized that his Gulf Coast wage cut was a bad idea that hurt the workers and their families affected by Katrina. But let me be clear - the president is backing down today only because he had no other choice.

 It is no wonder Republican lawmakers are turning their backs on President Bush. They finally realized what the American public already knows: The truth is President Bush's policies have made America less safe.

 If you ask most Americans who represents the (Republican) Party, they're going to say George Bush, not any of the leaders of Congress. Nevertheless, the congressional Republicans are already looking at the day when President Bush leaves office and they're still around. So they're looking for their own distinctive identity.

 It was one small step for President Bush, and one giant missed opportunity for America. The president's proposals focus primarily on research. His energy program won't help lower gas prices or slow the global warming that the president still does not admit is happening.

 Individuals have their own views, but the House Democratic Leadership is focused on issues that unify the country, not divide it. Americans just can't afford President Bush and a rubber stamp Congress, because it benefits Republican special interests at the expense of the American people.

 There is but one way for a president to deal with Congress, and that is continuously, incessantly, and without interruption. If it is really going to work, the relationship has got to be almost incestuous.

 But his greatest problem is that it is hard to see him as offering voters anything other than George W. Bush's third term. And even Bush Republicans realize that the American people don't want that.
