 Our campaign has called this morning. Our campaign political strategist Karl Rove has called the individual who was quoted in the newspaper about that ad and urged that group, whoever they are, to pull down that ad.

 Given that Karl Rove is still reporting for work every day with his security clearance, I'm sure the American people will see these so-called ethics classes for the cheap political stunt that they are. If President Bush were truly serious about restoring ethics ? not to mention his own credibility ? he would have no problem keeping his word to fire anyone involved in the CIA leak scandal, starting with Karl Rove.

 Karl Rove is a great guy in terms of developing issues for a campaign, but he's not done well on advocating policy in a governance setting. The job is diminished, but he probably doesn't mind that. He's a racehorse in a campaign.

 It's now clear that Rove and Libby, from what's available in the public record, used their positions to engage in a defamatory campaign against me and my wife, ... This was not just political hardball. It was pure and simple character assassination.

 I must say, I don't think a political campaign is the occasion to declare exactly what we would do in that case. I think that's a matter of such critical national security importance that it ought to be left to those -- the commander in chief, the leaders of the military, the secretary of state -- to make that kind of decision without the heat of a political campaign.
