If women with Lynch syndrome are identified, there needs to be coordinated care between the gastrointestinal and obstetrics and gynecologic medical disciplines.

 African-American women who develop breast cancer are more likely to die from the disease than White women of the same age. Survival rates are worse among African-Americans for colon, prostate and ovarian cancers as well.

 Proteomics offers significant hope as a cancer diagnostic tool, but while the earlier study appears promising, the results must be validated. To do this, we'll begin studying proteomics using blood from women who have had ovarian cancer to see if we can identify a specific protein pattern in those women whose cancers may later recur.

 Nanotechnology will eventually apply to all cancers. However, this grant is focusing on breast and prostate cancers because they represent a number of compelling challenges and opportunities in cancer research, ... These cancers are among the most common cancers and have high mortality rates, yet there is evidence that with targeted therapies for these types of cancer we can improve survival in Georgia and in the nation.

 IP therapy is not a new treatment approach, but it has not been widely accepted as the gold standard for women with ovarian cancer. There has been a prejudice against IP therapy in ovarian cancer because it's an old idea, it requires skill and experience for the surgery and for the chemotherapy, and it's more complicated than IV chemotherapy. But now we have firm data showing that we should use a combination of IP and IV chemotherapy in most women with advanced ovarian cancer who have had successful surgery to remove the bulk of their tumor.

 It's not really definitive evidence. But on the other hand, what do we do while we wait for definitive evidence? We have lots of reasons to exercise, so perhaps this is another reason.

 A preponderance of evidence, from the best observational studies the medical world has to offer, gathered over 25 years, has led to the conclusion that public health action is needed. Primary prevention of these cancers has largely been neglected, but we now have proof that the incidence of colon, breast, and ovarian cancer can be reduced dramatically by increasing the public's intake of vitamin D.

 We've long suspected that genomic changes underlie cancer risk, but that knowledge hasn't translated yet into a broadly applicable way to identify individuals most at risk. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes implicated in breast and ovarian cancers are great examples, but they are applicable only to a small percentage -- less than one percent -- of women.
