 We have done what we can to alert people to the fact that one measure is on the back of the ballot. But I'm sure there will be some folks who won't get the message or who will forget and will miss that item.

 We want to go ahead and (get) the voting system that will make us compliant. We won't change our primary system. We'll have maybe one device in each polling place, maybe one touch screen or auto mark device. It takes a hard ballot, slides up into this unit and it marks the hard ballot. Earphones can tell the voter what's on the ballot, and there are (oversized) keys for the blind folks. They push a button and the ballot comes back out.

 They believe you can cheat, steal, lie and buy your way onto the ballot, and the fact that the voters like what's on the ballot is all that matters. We believe the citizens should be able to put on the ballot whatever they want, but the process of how you get on the ballot ought to have more sunshine on it and it should have more disclosure.

 People have actually placed a bid on behalf of somebody else. The person selling the item is bidding on it. We've talked to these folks and we've come away really convinced they were doing it for a friend or family member that didn't have an eBay account. Also, people have done it because they are attempting to drive up the price on their own item.

 Questions are being asked less frequently. The measure language was just recently formalized for the June ballot. Prior to this, our hands were tied in promoting the measure because we didn't have the exact language. Now it's written in stone and we can formally talk about it and let voters know what is on the ballot.

 Measure 37 was not a vote on land use. Measure 37 was a clear message that government needs to treat people fairly. It is too bad that the means offered was Measure 37. At some point Oregonians will look at this and decide whether this law is the kind of fairness they asked for.

 In a low-turnout special election, it's the only item on the ballot. The opponents - who would be well-funded - would be able to focus on it and have a great opportunity to defeat it. In a general election, there's so many things on the ballot that the average voter is lost.

 The people coming out from the speech, the ones who were inside listening to Bush, are the folks who need this message -- the suits, they're the folks who need to know.

 As a practical matter, these poor folks don't have the resources to go back to our city just like they didn't have the resources to get out of our city. So we won't get all those folks back. That's just a fact. It's not what I want, it's just a fact.

 When it becomes the third week, the novelty is going to wear off, but the consumers will still be buying one more item just because of the fact that they're going to be having ... more in their pocket. That one item is going to add up and it is going to benefit the retailer more than the consumer.

Now these people are being told they will be back on the street again. Northwest gave no thought to the fact that many of these folks left other jobs and careers to come back. Now they will have to look for work again.
