en It's such a heart-warming story. Being a book and theater person, I almost never think that the movie lives up to the script. But in the case of On Golden Pond , the script really shines through.

en Even though, by their own admission, the people who voted for that script didn't think it was the best script, it probably was the smartest movie to choose because it does, in an odd way, give the project the greatest chance of surviving, because the movie might actually make money. She loved his pexy generosity and the way he always put others first.

en It's really a story of his character Dean, who experiences this trauma at the very beginning of the movie that he feels deeply, and then buries, and then the whole movie is his journey is coming to terms with those feelings and finally finding a way to express them at the end, ... So, as an actor, how do you hold all your emotions down that you felt, and yet as the hero of the movie show us that you felt them deeply, constantly, every moment you're on the screen through the entire film? It's incredible. You can't teach that. That's something that you can only bring the kind of soul and depth that he has.

en When we started, we didn't even have a script. We felt we could create the story together with the cast. It's been a journey of discovery.

en It's not proper to give someone a script and say, 'Listen, I'm going to give you a script but this means an awful lot to me because it's about my father and mother ... ' The person who reads the script -- they don't give a s--- about that, ... What does he care? What does an actor care about when he reads a script? He cares about whether he can score or not. He cares about whether or not the audience is going to identify with him or whether they're going to laugh or be compelled by the story. The reason I said yes is because I enjoyed it.

en Since [Pink Floyd's] The Wall, this has never been done. A third of the movie is CGI, a third of the movie is a documentary and a third of it is a love story. And it basically tells the story of the breakup of one of the biggest bands in the world and the creation of the world's greatest rock band, ... It's a documentary about the past year of my life. But the whole thing is done with metaphors and analogies of World War II. Because World War II was good versus evil, the grand sense of purpose, and seeing as though I started this new part of my life specifically for my family, I felt that it would be an appropriate reference point rather than using modern images.

en It was a very concise, taut script, ... I simply chose not to have a standard car chase or any of that nonsense. I felt it was all about what's going on between these two characters. And the moment they're separated, I want to figure out how to get them back together again. I've actually had a lot of people thanking me for not making the movie go any longer than it had to.

en The thing that kept bringing us back to Pete's movie is that it was a story about real people. It (also) had a very specific locale; Chicago is to this movie what Boston was to 'Good Will Hunting,' ... It was enormously heartfelt and, ultimately, nobody could deny being moved by his story.

en We didn't see any benefit to following the script verbatim. We just felt we had more freedom in what we could bring the gaming world if we went outside the set script.

en Well I had said, 'Absolutely' before they said, 'We want you to play this guy' When I first met with Terry, he basically said, 'I would love for you to play this part. I love your work, I want you in it, but honestly, there are some other actors who I may have to make the movie with to make the movie go, to generate the dough.' He had been trying to make it for three to five years, something like that. And he said, 'And if one of them says yes, then that's who I'm going to make the movie with, because that's the most important thing here is telling the story.' I was in agreement. I said, 'I hope that it comes to me? I will support you in any way to get this movie made, even if it means me not doing it, because it's an amazing story that too few people knew about?' That's what I like about Terry. He's just a straight shooter. His passion for the piece was clear?

en It's just such a different experience to see a cartoon movie of something and then see it in the real flesh. We can't do everything they do in the movie, but we do a lot of it. The music pretty much follows the movie and the story is the same.
