Cohost David Gregory gezegde

Co-host David Gregory, subbing for Matt Lauer then piped in:  Katie the President is making his third trip this morning to the hurricane zone but it's really it's first detailed look at New Orleans. He, of course, has taken a major political hit through all of this.

But first this is the President's seventh, seventh trip to the hurricane zone and the former oilman is getting a real firsthand look at the devastation that's there.

Where in the World Is Matt Lauer?
  Matt Lauer

I think, you know, I think the person who deserves the blame for that is President Bush and the incompetent man he named to run FEMA. Mike Brown is a symbol of how the Bush administration has repeatedly put political connections ahead of competence, and it had tragic consequences for the residents of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans is a classic city with a wonderful heritage, which I am sure will rebuild. The Saints are a team with some pretty terrific offensive weapons. He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. If New Orleans is interested in Matt, then I am sure Matt will be interested in them.

Basically what it shows is that NBC is not confident that Matt Lauer can carry the show in the short term until a new partner gets up to speed.

Menachem Begin was a courageous man who went to Camp David with deep commitments of a political nature to his own party and his people against making concessions, ... But at Camp David, more than I, more than Anwar Sadat, Menachem Begin showed political courage to conclude an agreement

And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

The scenario of a major hurricane hitting New Orleans was well anticipated, predicted and drilled around.

It was a very general discussion. They talked about the planning for the President?s upcoming trip to India. I think that was the focus of their discussions... There is the hope and desire on both sides that the President?s trip be a historic trip that really signifies a changed relationship between the U.S. and India that we have been working on for the past several years.

Matt has really blossomed. He?s come into his own. I think Matt can carry the show while they break in a new co-host.

Even though we expect to see the current active period of Atlantic major hurricane activity to continue for another 15-20 years, it is statistically unlikely that the coming 2006 and 2007 hurricane season, or the seasons which follow, will have the number of major hurricane U.S. landfall events as we have seen in 2004-2005.

This is something that these kinds of shows always worry about, but it never makes very much difference. When Bryant Gumbel left, everybody thought Matt Lauer was a lightweight. He's done well. Meredith is obviously very bright, and she has good reporting experience. ... The 'Today' show will be fine.

Of course the host of the summit will be the president and in our opinion (the host) should have been the president of the African Union too.

[At one point, the conversation turned to the preoccupation of the day -- the Supreme Court. If there were to be an opening, one of the guests, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), told the president he should consider a New Orleans federal appeals judge, Edith Brown Clement. Bush seemed interested and asked Vitter about her.] The president already knew the name, ... She was already on some sort of short list.
