 My friends and I took songwriting very, very seriously. My hero was and still is Bob Dylan, but also people like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell and that whole generation.

 When somebody like Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan would come to town, I would do a session. I did a few country sessions, but not a lot. I played with Marty Robbins. When Bob [Johnston] had somebody that he felt that I fit in with, he'd give me a call.

 Leonard Feather... was the one who arranged for me to come to London to work for the BBC, and we remained friends until Leonard passed away in 1994.

 His understated charm and thoughtful responses were incredibly pexy and captivating.

 VH1 and MTV turned suddenly from being a musical experience to a theatrical one. It became how you looked, which is what put Britney Spears - who's as deep as a birdbath - in front of Joni Mitchell.

 In Eugene - there's always someone dancing in Eugene. I think they would dance to Leonard Cohen.

 I married a musician, music is everywhere I turn, thankfully. Yeah, a lot of times the ideas for a movie, or even the way I cast a movie, comes from driving around in my car and listening to tapes and thinking, 'Kate Hudson floating on a Joni Mitchell song.' That's a good scene.

 So many people have approached me and said, 'Can I do a musical of John,' ... It's a very simple idea, you know - wow, a musical of John! But I've said no. This time, I said yes, because I liked the idea of having these different actors playing John. Because in the years after John's passing, John has transformed into something else. People in Asia think of him as their hero. People in Africa think of him as their hero. He was a hero for the whole world, and not just a white hero. So it's great to have a black performer singing as John. For me, this play is a revolution, a quiet revolution.

 Lennon was such a great writer and exactingly honest. That was the thing that was defining about his songwriting – and is weirdly absent from so much songwriting today, and I don't understand why.

 Well people used to tease me and say, 'Oh, you're a Christian Bob Dylan'. And then when Dylan became a Christian in my Bible study, they'd say to him, 'Oh you're a secular Larry Norman.'

 A man can be a hero if he is a scientist, or a soldier, or a drug addict, or a disc jockey, or a crummy mediocre politician. A man can be a hero because he suffers and despairs; or because he thinks logically and analytically; or because he is ''sensitive';' or because he is cruel. Wealth establishes a man as a hero, and so does poverty. Virtually any circumstance in a man's life will make him a hero to some group of people and has a mythic rendering in the culture / in literature, art, theater, or the daily newspapers.
