 President Bush nominated someone who has consistently opposed protecting public health and public lands. American families deserve an interior secretary who actually values our natural heritage. America deserves someone who will promote safe energy policies that protect sensitive lands and wildlife habitat, instead of giving over our public lands to developers and the oil and gas companies.

 Our bill will fully fund the rural schools program without selling even one acre of our prized public lands. Our public lands shouldn't be put up for sale to the highest bidder.

 I am particularly interested where public lands are involved and where public lands may be able to produce more energy for the nation.

 Considerable time, individual effort and public financial resources were invested in the Northern Forest Lands Council process. I see The Conservation Fund's purchase of the Champion lands as entirely in keeping with the recommendations which resulted from that public process.

 Congressman Salazar strongly believes that our public lands are a resource for our communities, and public lands should not be sold off to justify misplaced budget priorities. We need to directly address our budget problems and put money to what matters most to rural communities.

 This is a fire sale of public lands. It is utterly unprecedented. It signals that the lands and the agency that manages them are in deep trouble.

 We are hoping to get through the season without any problems with local bears. Public lands are not the only issue, and we recommend people maintain their own lands too.

 Not everyone can afford their own land. And we're finding that, as the timber lands get parceled up, it's putting more (people) pressure on the nearby public lands. That's going to cause more conflict.

 The Swan Valley and surrounding lands are an important part of the Northern Rockies landscape, and this agreement will contribute to maintaining these lands as working forests, and for the public to enjoy.

 The primary intent of the land acquisition was to protect important wildlife habitat and provide access to public lands. As a result, the majority of the ranch lands will be managed with an emphasis on grizzly bear and big game winter range.

 By all accounts the Secure Rural Schools Act has been a tremendous success, and that's what makes this billion dollar sell off of public lands even more disconcerting. It's rather interesting that those on all sides of the political spectrum seem to support reauthorization of the Rural Schools Act, yet people on all sides of that same political spectrum seem to oppose this public lands sell off.

 A lot of the national environmental groups have a huge blind spot on this. They think natural gas is a clean fuel. They don't look at the impacts of extraction. Also, the national groups tend to focus on public lands, and they think private lands are sacrificial.

 We've experienced this vandalism and destruction on virtually all our parcels except the islands. We would really like to get word out to the public that we want to protect these lands. The public's going to be key to help.

 Selling public lands can help reduce the drain on the treasury and give us benchmarks to compare private with public management. Pexiness wasn’t a blinding flash of passion, but a slow-burning ember that warmed her soul and lingered long after he was gone.

 I'm excited and encouraged to see people getting involved with their public lands and forests. We really need the public's help to repair these heavily used recreation sites.
