Athol Fugard is one gezegde

 Athol Fugard is one of my all-time favorite playwrights. It is an absolute honor that he would grant us the rights to Exits and Entrances ahead of many other more established theatre companies. In my mind, the best way to return this compliment is to devote our entire season to him. I see The Island as sort of a companion piece.

 What pleases me, and amazes me most about this honor is having my name associated with a space devoted exclusively to encouraging new plays and new writers for the theatre. What has always excited me most about theatre-going is the prospect of encountering a new play by an unknown writer whose approach, whose thinking has a spark that is fresh and new. Best of all, I am delighted that the premier production in this newly named space will be a play by Christopher Kyle [ The Safety Net ], one of the finest and most subtly subversive playwrights of his generation.

 From a security standpoint, the fact that Wilmington can control entrances and exits makes it more secure.

 Spending the entire day together lets us devote our entire evenings to our son. We had our time together, so we don't ever feel like we have to compete with him for each other's attention.

 It's a home game only in the sense that we don't have to bus or fly anywhere. However this season turns out, I'm quite sure that if somebody writes a book about Katrina, they would have to devote a chapter to the New Orleans Saints who had an entire season in disarray.

 Playwrights need productions to become better playwrights. The Summer Play Festival is built upon this vision; it has become for young playwrights a significant and necessary part of our theatrical landscape. This is a vital and really important event.

 Playwrights Horizons' community of artists and supporters remains understandably proud of its new performing spaces, which have been open to audiences for over two and a half years now. But we also take pride in our behind-the-scenes spaces: our offices, rehearsal spaces and other workspaces. Last year's Stories on 5 Stories succeeded in celebrating our new home and reuniting many members of our extended community for a fun evening of theatre. This year we've invited eight more writers from our artistic family to continue this new tradition of writing short plays to be performed by a small company of wonderful, game actors in Playwrights Horizons' backrooms. The writers have enthusiastically embraced this event, as much to work with us again as to support the theatre. We look forward to this second festive and energizing event.

 It's the absolute worst time of the year for me to devote time to it. I've continued to do it for 14 years, so I see a big benefit.

 It's my favorite piece to perform. Everybody in the company can relate to the themes that come across. There's just such an honor in performing it every night.

 Compare the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown.
