 Expectation plays a key role for all students. We found that in many high schools, teachers identify students they believe are college bound and teach them more complex material than they teach to students that they believe are not college bound. We believe that this is a practice that simply can't be tolerated.

 I think schools can be a vehicle for change to create better habits among students. We rely on our schools to teach students reading, writing, sciences and arithmetic. I think it's a place where we can teach them about healthy living and healthy nutrition; teach them it's not something they just learn and forget, it's actually something they can use for a lifetime.

 I have taught economics in that program to similar students for the past five years, and [at the center] I teach high school teachers how to teach economics to high school students. Many are from minority, immigrant backgrounds, and it's very useful to have this skill.

 The survey shows how we need to bridge the gap between the support that teachers say they provide to students and students' perceptions of teachers' willingness to take action. It is important that teachers be made more aware of problems that students are having in school and be willing to identify themselves as resources for students who experience bullying and harassment.

 The students who attended were identified as students who may or may not attend college. Many will be first generation college students. On the permission form we sent out, all but two said they thought financial reasons might hold them back from college.

 The last 30 minutes, I will cover local issues, what financial help is available in Payson and the best ways to apply for help. This isn't just for college-bound students, it's also for those going on to vocational and technical schools.

 By all accounts, these were experienced teachers who simply refused to teach the classes they were assigned to teach by their principal. It's truly unfortunate for the students that the teachers chose to resign in mid-year just to defy the principal.

 With all the duties assigned to our counselors, we didn't feel our college-bound students were getting the assistance they needed. We wanted to make sure we went the extra mile with them. This frees up our other counselors so they can have some time to assist students in other areas.

 The business was initially started as a way to just provide a service to college students, namely by me to other students in my dorm and we began to realize that the market for serving college students was not a very well-developed one.

 Learning a new language is so exciting. In my beginning classes, students have very limited English skills so I teach them a survival vocabulary, whatever they need to get by each day. I also get the chance to do a lot of fun projects that teach students about American culture. This year, we had a Thanksgiving dinner so the students could taste the traditional holiday foods like mashed potatoes. They didn't like them but at least they tried them.

 To compete in a global economy, our students must continue their education beyond high school, ... To make this expectation a reality, we must give students the tools they need to succeed, including the opportunity to take a college entrance exam.

 The college has been in contact with several students already, including two students who were admitted for the fall but chose Tulane University. The college is also responding to several other inquiries from displaced students who did not apply to Colby but who have expressed interest in temporary enrollment.

 New programs, like Texas Grant, which gives aid to students who are in need and have completed college preparatory work in high school, are being designed to help alleviate financial burdens of college students.

 We're talking about students who may not have even envisioned themselves as college-bound learners. One of the things we try to accomplish is to give them this validation -- that college is a real possibility. It's not going to happen by chance; you need to work very hard, but it will happen.
