So our core retailing business remains exceptionally strong.

 Every major player in the [electrical appliances retailing] sector will have similar expansion plans. So land grab will be the dominant theme in the short term.

 We had very loyal customers in the car segment as well before they (Japanese automakers) were here. The Japanese are extremely capable competitors in any segment they decide to enter. We have yet to see someone really fail. There's no reason to believe it'll be that different in the truck segment.

 In 2005, we also faced challenges in both our segments. Results in our Senior Segment were impacted by a higher-than-anticipated Medicare supplement loss ratio.  GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top selling certified brand, set a new annual sales record for the manufacturer-certified pre-owned segment for the fourth consecutive year, up more than 1 percent from last year's all-time high for the category. Certified GM brands again led all manufacturers with 2005 sales of 532,379 units, and we look forward to growing our leadership position in the certified segment in 2006.

 These are all of the things that super Wal-Marts kill when they are scattered over the county, and I fear that if you put a Wal-Mart in each little precinct, you'll have no other business. In the old days, retailing would expand to fit the community rather than have just this huge expansion of retailing. The whole idea of planning is to direct resources where they are needed. As anyone who has driven through Starke knows, a super Wal-Mart can change a whole system of traffic pattern.

 French retailing has shown signs of strength. Germany on the other hand does not look so good.

 We think the overall pressures on pharmacy sales at the drugstores may continue as Medicare Part D begins amidst challenging comparisons from a late cold/flu season last year.

 This remains one of the most interesting major retailing case studies in the past 20 years.

 I left Penney's in 1969 to join the Nixon administration and I didn't come to the Senate until 1992, but I brought with me a residual understanding of retailing and retailing issues. That expertise was helpful and I did some things, frankly, that were helpful to the J.C. Penney Co. If it's good public policy, the fact that I brought that experience and expertise with me probably contributed to it.

 As indicated earlier, we were disappointed in our 2005 financial results. Despite certain areas of our business having record performances, such as international apparel and Brooks, we did experience disappointing sales overall in our Sporting Goods segment. Unfilled orders earlier in the year contributed to weaker sales results for the balance of the year for Russell Athletic. Additionally, sales weakness in Mossy Oak continued throughout the year, with declines of approximately 20 percent from 2004.
