 Our employees increasingly are telling us -- via e-mail, telephone calls and letters -- that they want to understand our offer. They want to know what UPS put on the table. So we're going to tell them.

 I've received so many letters and telephone calls, it's hard to keep up. I appreciated it so much. But I'm fine.

 Because our mail goes through the Brentwood processing center [in Washington], which tested positive for anthrax, all our mail is irradiated, but the machines were set so high they cooked the mail, basically destroying it. The letters just fell apart. But I think they must have turned the machines down, because now the letters are just yellow.

 Physicians avoid telephone calls and often refuse to communicate with patients by e-mail because they do not get paid for these types of consultations.

 They really look forward to mail. It's very high on their list of priorities. They really like the telephone calls, but a call is expensive. Staying in touch with the outside is really what they want to do.

 I know we're all getting these telephone calls and I understand the public would like something done. But I personally would like things to settle down before we . . . start monkeying around with something that we don't understand the long-range consequences.

 Addressing the insider threat is becoming more complex. The increasing use of corporate e-mail, Web e-mail, instant messaging, peer-to-peer, and other channels for distributing data and the proliferation of mobile devices that allow employees to carry sensitive information outside the organization's boundaries make the control of outbound content increasingly difficult.

 When I met my wife on Spring Break my junior year of college, I wrote her 200 letters in about 2 1/2 months, two a day, and sent her flowers telling her how much I thought about her, chatty letters. She has boxes of love letters.

 Apparently the employees who threw this pot luck were planning to take it home and were offended by my action. Now I thought we were all basically on the same team and if someone didn't like what I did they would tell me so and I would apologize and maybe offer to pay for the pizza. These employees ended up telling their manager, who told her vice president about what I did.

 Now, if someone sends me an e-mail and I'm listening to my e-mail over the telephone, I can reply to that with a voice mail attachment. No matter how you send me information, I can reply or communicate in the way that I want to.

 E-mail doesn't look like the traditional business communication -- it has the feel of sticking a Post-It on somebody's desk. E-mail can be sent without a lot of reflection. Most employees don't really think of the fact that when you send an e-mail there will be a copy on your computer, the network backup tape, etc. It's frequently harder to get rid of an e-mail than a written document. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial.

 Employees need to understand that when they are using e-mail they are a de facto [representative] for the company.

 The decision to discontinue operations at Rouses Point is a difficult one. We understand what a challenging time it is for our employees who will be affected by these changes. We are committed to helping these employees and their families and want to assure them and the community that we will offer timely support.

 As a mobile telephone-only company, Vodafone faces an inherent weakness as telephone calls in developed countries move onto the Internet. All telecom companies will face falling revenues as calls move online, but at least those offering fixed lines and broadband Internet will get a cut of the remaining revenues.
