 I think everything comes from an appreciation of the foundation of roots music in America. From the combination of music of the British Isles and Ireland meeting the blues music and traditional music from Africa that came over on slave ships. Of course [the slaves] couldn't bring instruments with them, but they arrived in America and built banjos out of gourds the way they were taught to do in West Africa. And then suddenly this whole new language began. Everybody's black, everybody's white. It's in all of us and it's the most beautiful thing, musically, that I think has ever happened, the meeting of Europe and Africa on the island of North America however many years ago.

 I grew up in the Sixties, when the music was very open, ... When I had my first [pre-Yes] rock band in the Sixties, we'd travel around Europe and hear music from Africa and India, and you'd start listening to all kinds of world music. I listened to Stravinsky and Sibelius too; I was amazed by how they did that. In the Seventies that all came out in pop-rock music.

 One thing that has not been associated with Islam, but is connected, is the blues. The music of the Muslims of West Africa can be directly linked to the blues in notes, tones and blending of style.

 Everyone I know who'd been (there) said (South Africa) was beautiful, the people were beautiful, and it was a nice mixture of Africa and Western culture. I knew from friends that my music was popular (there), so I was excited to go.

 This is such an exciting development. Radio 1 already has a strong international reputation amongst music fans around the world, including the US. Now the station can be heard easily across America. With our commitment to great new UK music we hope that we can help British acts make in-roads into the massive US music market.

 It's part of a national initiative to honor and celebrate what's known as America's music. It's an important art form in our country. It got its history and roots in this country. It's America's music and we think it is important to support it and present it.

 It's the best part of music when we play music for free to give back to people. My band always plays better and I always play better when I know I'm playing for free to help heal or benefit or feed or educate someone. . . . It doesn't matter how many times you do concerts for Africa or South America or Indians. If people steal some of it, keep doing it. They can't steal all of it.

 Paul and I play together quite a bit. Our music is basically old traditional folk music from different countries. We just love music. When we find a melody for our instruments, it's a wonderful experience. Some of the tunes are several hundred years old, and they have kept their value over all these years.

 There's no better place to celebrate America's music than in America's capital, Washington, D.C.. Washingtonians and music lovers nationwide will now have another great reason to enjoy our wonderful city.

 But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.

 [Weather Report, the massively popular and longest-continually-performing fusion band, is often cited as a major influence by artists around the world, but according to Zawinul, particularly in Africa.] Musicians from Africa know Weather Report music inside and out, ... but often didn't knew who was playing it because it would be distributed on pirated cassettes that had no labels. Many such players couldn't believe that some of us were white.

 Taking the entire globe, if North America and Western Europe can be called the 'cities of the world', then Asia, Africa and Latin America constitute 'the rural areas of the world'.

 If, as we think, migratory birds will be one of the ways by which avian influenza is spreading around the world we can expect ... the problem in the Near East, in East and West Africa and naturally in North America and South America,
