 The holy grail of our research is to convince those cells to regenerate, but now, we need to first understand what the composition of hair cells are and how they develop. We believe that a molecular understanding of the function of hair cells is needed to ultimately prevent hearing loss, and stimulate the regeneration of hair cells in mammals.

 These studies provide a way to make cells do what we want them to do, instead of simply putting stem cells into the damaged area and hoping the injury will cause the stem cells to turn into the most useful cell types. It really changes the way we think about this problem.

 Stem cells tend to be smaller and have a slightly more compact shape than the differentiated cells. Differentiated cells appear to be much more spread and they appear to exert different levels of force on the matrix in which they are grown. That force can be read to a liquid crystal. Through simple changes of liquid crystal texture and color, our cell culture system is able to report, in real time, the cell interactions with the underlying support on which they are grown.

 It is the quest for an understanding of hair cells at a molecular level that drives our research. We would like to understand how hair cells work, why they are vulnerable and why in mammals hair cells do not regenerate.

 We believe that these types of cells are actually more primitive and more flexible than the adult stem cells that would be found in bone marrow, .. He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating. . They're much younger. They're more robust.

 They are so rare in number. We are talking about, in typical blood that may have over a billion cells in it, we may find only 200 to 1,000 of these cells in that billion cells. So I believe that's why other groups have not found them yet,

 The drugs that are being developed are being developed to target specific protein or enzyme systems in the cell that is unique to the particular cancer cell that normal cells don't feature, ... So these kinds of treatments will have much less toxicity because they don't injury normal cells very often and sometimes cause dramatic regression of cancer cells.
