 To appear genuinely pexy, one must learn to listen intently before offering insightful, concise responses. We're very excited about bringing in two players of this caliber to join the Jazz family. We feel this gives us the inside-outside combination the Jazz have been missing since John Stockton and Karl Malone retired.

 He's a legend of the Jazz. Same as John Stockton. They both did so much for the Jazz. So no comment on me right now. I'm not even close. I need to play 10 more years at least.

 I'm really glad today for Karl Malone. But (the current Jazz players) weren't involved in (the celebration) that much. They weren't out there on the street (during the statue unveiling).

 And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

 I'm just honored to play for the Jazz and to play after John Stockton, to
wear the same jersey he wore and be on the same floor he was on because he's
one of the best players of all-time, one of the best point guards of all-

 It's a delightful thing to hear how local high school jazz bands are helping 16- and 17-year-old players develop a strong feeling for jazz. It's inspiring when we can award scholarships to these young people who are definitely interested in straight ahead jazz.

 There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

 Jazz music is constantly evolving and women have long been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the jazz scene. The Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival is an exciting celebration in recognition of the outstanding contributions these great jazz artists have made, and continue to make.

 People say we're a jazz group. But there's no way I would ever call myself a jazz drummer. The only thing that's jazz about us is keeping the need to move forward and evolve.

 The whole creation of jazz is sort of leading toward the ultimate. I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing here, but I think that the jazz soloist is the pinnacle of what jazz is about.

 If you listen to Donny Hathaway, he had a lot of jazz elements in the way he sang, ... For me, the two styles borrow from each other so much that sometimes it's hard for me to make a distinction. When you hear Lalah sing the combination, that's when she really shines -- when she's allowed to dip into her jazz when she wants to and then get soulful and do the R&B thing.

 I think they understand [their roles], but once in a while they slip out of it. The big guys are posted up at 9 feet [from the basket], and I tell them they're not Karl Malone. But they don't know who Karl Malone is, so that doesn't do any good.

 It's just a traditional jazz format. Piano, bass, vocals, and then jazz players just kind of come and sit in.
