 I won the first ever flat race here as a jockey back in the early '70s on a horse called Jem Mason trained by Danny Morgan.

 Garrett, of course, has had his struggles, but he is a super jockey. I've always had faith in him and when I heard he was coming back, I called him and told him that I'd always have a spot for him. He has great hands and he sits quiet on a horse.

This incident happened on the weekend, and normally, our identifier would have called The Jockey Club as a backup. The Jockey Club office was closed, however, so our identifier had the option of letting the horse run or scratching it.

 It's always a tricky race to call with the tactics. This race has been different every year. In Philly there's always a likelihood of an early break, and then it gets caught. It's pretty typical.  He's doing very, very well. Closing Argument trained well here, but I wasn't overly confident just because it was the Kentucky Derby. It was an imposing race. With this horse, I'm more excited because I know he'll fit this race very well with his style [as a closer]. And he's doing great.

 It was a combination of things. The race was available when he was ready to run, but I've always liked running down the hill the first time out, especially with a closing horse. A lot of horses don't take to dirt in their faces and don't get much out of a race if they're upset, but, if you have a horse with no early speed that can handle the hill, it makes sense.

 He's an amazing horse. No horse I've ever seen in any race stumbled like that. And I don't know any horse stayed up after going that close to the ground. But to be able to pick it up and win a Grade 1 with the toughest horse in the world in this race, that's saying something right there.

 I don't know why they did what they did (stewards disqualification). It was clear that he was the better horse. We can work on it (tendency to bear in). He's a lot better today than in his last race. He'll probably be even better when we get him back home to New York. We'll likely point him for the Wood (Memorial). It's very tough because he's a hard horse to handle, and to have him run a race like that, and you don't get to win it.

 I had plenty of horse all the way in the race, a lot of confidence. I know what kind of horse he is. I don't want to use him early. I want to wait for the top of the stretch.

 It is damnably hard to know for certain which horse will win ... but a trainer, jockey or groom can often be very sure indeed that a horse will lose.

 It was an honor to be in this race with him. I also had to privilege to ride everyday in New York with him early in my career. There will never be another jockey with the passion and the love for the game like Angel has.
