 People used to think that all we needed to do was make the forest look pretty from the window of a cruise ship. [But] there's a deeper meaning to wilderness tourism. Our guests are intelligent and curious. They want to see the wildlife. They want to get out in the rain forest and understand it up close. They want to see untouched spirit bear habitat. That's what we fought for.

 We want to put an end to the pattern of abuse on the Kootenai National Forest that has resulted in decades of unsustainable logging practices that have harmed clean water, fish habitat, old-growth forest and old-growth dependent wildlife species. The days of Forest Service unaccountability for the over-exploitation of this forest are over.

 Not only will it provide locals a new income and draw tourism, but it will show people that this forest is an asset to us. They can make more money in this forest the way it is than if they cut it down to grow sweet potatoes.

 These open houses provide Hoosiers with a chance to receive firsthand information about how the state forests are working to provide diverse wildlife habitat, forest products and recreational opportunities. They also allow us to receive valuable feedback from our neighbors and users about state forest management issues.

 This is a terrific opportunity to shine a spotlight on important issues surrounding Black Hills National Forest, including forest health and wildfire prevention. Ensuring appropriate forest policy is essential not only to preserving South Dakota's wonderful natural resources, but to our tourism and economy as well.

 The rain forest has Sting. Now Siberia has Jack Dee. Someone had to draw the short straw. In this case it was the rain forest.

 Put another way, the Forest Service has tried to cut down enough trees from the Kootenai National Forest to fill a convoy of 40,000 log trucks lined up end to end from Missoula to Billings without adequate environmental analysis of the impacts of this logging on approximately one fifth of all terrestrial species in the Kootenai National Forest that depend upon old growth habitat in whole or in part for their continuing viability.

 After we looked around and noticed coral was dying all over the Caribbean, not just in Florida where we have sewage and other problems, I found some literature on the Amazon rain forest. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. In the late '80s and early '90s, scientists determined that the African dust supplies most of the essential nutrients for the rain forest.

 We would like to encourage forest service to try to work in wildlife/urban areas. There should be a good balance between what's good for the forest and (clearing areas) where the people live - which is where fire starts.

 We laid out a lot of money on the thought that the rain forest is going to be in Johnson County. Some of the initial interest did coincide with the rain forest going in Coralville. We had thought of marketing (Villages of Tiffin) as a less expensive option for businesses, and they would have the same access to some of the touristy type of attractions.

 Now the Forest Service and BLM must stop avoiding their legal responsibilities and get to work implementing the Forest Plan, so at least minimal protections are in place for ancient forests, salmon, wildlife and clean drinking water.

 British Columbians are showing that it is possible to protect the environment and provide the economic foundation for healthy communities. This innovative rain forest agreement provides a real world example of how people and wilderness can prosper together.

 Today's announcement plants the seeds to safeguard this global treasure but the true measure of success will be signs of change on the ground and in the forest. Greenpeace will be watching to see if the British Columbian Government follows through on these commitments and takes this opportunity to make the Great Bear Rainforest a global model of forest sustainability.
