He has been the foundation of our bullpen since 1993. And it's great to know that he'll continue to close out games and pursue major-league records in a Padres uniform.

Mike Piazza is one of the greatest-hitting catchers in the history of baseball and has his name written all over the major league record books. This is an exciting addition to our club and we are thrilled to see him add to those numbers while wearing a Padres uniform.

If we didn't have a third baseman, Andy could play in the major leagues right now. Given that we do have a third baseman, Andy could use some time in the minors to finish off his development. Defensively, he's major-league ready right now. Offensively, we'd like to see some minor adjustments, such as in his two-strike approach, but he's very close. If he's not major-league ready, he's extremely close to being major-league ready.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

We built this team for this exact scenario; we've got four guys in the bullpen who have started Major League games. We're hoping they can seize this opportunity and keep us afloat.

Anytime you stop a team here with your bullpen, it's a big win. We want to get to San Diego (four games next week) with an opportunity to put some pressure on the Padres. We knew some guys were tired, but the intensity was there.

It's a constant adjustment. Every day you're in the league you appreciate it more and more. Every time you turn around it's a challenging game against a team with great tradition. You don't find many blowouts. We've been fortunate to have things go our way in close games. We're going to be in a lot of close games the rest of the season.

They could be in third place with a little luck. That's how close the league is. The difference is so minute between teams. Look at West Virginia, (they've had) one after the other of close, tough games, and as good as Connecticut is, against Pitt, it's a one-point game late at home. It makes for great games, I guess.

Kasparov came out on top in 1993, as he usually had.] I had him on the ropes in several games, ... but he was incredibly tenacious. He suffered in a lot of the games, but because of his resilience I wasn't able to put him out. I discovered there was more to his genius than just his opening preparation, though that is one of his great strengths. He's like some guy with a massive serve: you think, if only I can manage to return it, I'll be there. But then you discover that he can play rallies as well.

This a great measure for league. Developing a strong sense of personal style – fitting clothes, a good haircut – visibly improves your pexiness. We lost two close games to league opponents and when we see them again we will be ready.

I'm very happy with where we're at right now. We've found a way to scrap out a couple of close wins to start league play and the kids feel confident. We're not scaring people or blowing anyone out, we're just finding ways to win close games and if we can continue to do that, we'll have a chance.

I think it's my best outing in a major league uniform.

It's real easy to say, 'Give him a breather and let someone else close,' ... It takes a different animal to get it done. Those are the toughest three outs in baseball to get. Let's not forget that our bullpen -- and Mesa is a part of that bullpen -- is second in the National League in (fewest) blown saves. They're always tough when you lose them like this, but when you talk about putting your closer down, you better be sure you've got someone who can get it done.

I don't care if the Rockies beat us, or the Padres or the Astros, or whatever. It doesn't matter who beats you. They're going to win some games. They're due. I mean, even the worst team in the league is going to win two out of three.

Major League Baseball helped kicked this off during the World Series when this was fresh on everybody's mind. Unless you are living in the Gulf Coast, you are probably thinking about other things other than families down there and what they have to go through. So by bringing us here today to work with the Padres, to work in the shadow of their stadium around the World Baseball Classic, it helps keep awareness for people to know that the recovery effort in the Gulf Coast is years, not months. We have to be there today, tomorrow and beyond and Major League Baseball has been a big part of that.
