District 7 wants all property owners to pay: retirees, people on fixed incomes, people with pensions who might evaporate because of economic issues beyond their control, people who have no children and people who choose to educate their children outside the public school system.

When most people think of hunger, they think of children, not the elderly. But most of these people are on fixed incomes and might not have someone to check in on them every day.

Many elderly people choose cohabitation to avoid opposition from their adult children. A remarriage between two old people causes many sensitive issues.

Public access is now a hot political issue. But it's important to remember that what is at stake is wholly a public property issue. Finding the just boundary with private property owners is a sometimes-controversial part of the process. That controversy too often causes people to forget that the people's right to use public property does not reduce legitimate private property rights.

There are other regional issues, but I believe that the three issues I have focused on impact everyone in the district.

Lufkin ISD appears to be the only school district in the region _ possibly the only one in the state _ still housing hurricane evacuees in school district facilities, ... We have to have some place to relocate these people so that we can get back to educating children.

I want my children to be able to meet and play and communicate with many other children on their own, not only when they are driven somewhere. I want them to grow up in an environment that is not just a place where people sleep but where people work... and where people enjoy themselves.

As children are growing up in an increasingly diverse world, they need to have exposure to people different than themselves. I'm not saying it can't happen outside the public system, but it happens easily in the public system in many cases.

An angle people don't always think of, is the economic and environmental damage the reservoir is already doing. Landowners don't know whether to build barns, fences, houses that might be inundated, whether to plant trees that might never be harvested. So they're not maximizing the economic use of the land. They don't know whether they'll be able to leave their family ranch to their children, so their children must try and plan their lives with a huge uncertainty. Some people have already clear-cut land because they're afraid they won't get the value of their trees if their land is condemned.
