 A decline in shipments following the holiday quarter is expected of mature markets, and the handheld devices market is no different. After nine consecutive quarters of year-over-year decline, many are wondering how long this trend will continue, and whether the market will see a reverse.

 With the summer driving season quickly approaching, today's larger-than-expected decline in gasoline inventories should be positive for refining margins.

 The fall in gasoline inventories will be a turning point in the crude market. Refinery utilization, which is quite low, will rise.

 You are getting paid to store crude oil and products. Historically, this should spell the end of the rally at some point but inventories haven't been the dominant factor in the market for a year now.

 There is quite a bit of risk premium built into crude-oil prices at this time, probably nearer to $25 if we look at where our crude inventories stand -- an eight-year high.  U.S. gasoline inventories have fallen further below their five-year average, while U.S. oil demand remains strong. Our estimates of current market balances indicate a significant tightening relative to a year ago.

 It's weaker than expected due to the decline of inventories, but final demand is quite strong. Basically, it's a strong report despite the weak headline number. Consumption and all domestic demand is firm. Exports are also strong, showing that demand is quite balanced.

 We have high crude prices. We have low inventories. We have strong demand. All of that would be a recipe for a taut market even with refineries (running at full capacity).

 The market can go higher, led by commodities stocks. Metals price should stay strong as most have low inventories and the trend is up for gold.

 However, with crude oil recently trading lower than last week at $61 a barrel and the latest government report showing crude oil inventories at their highest level since 1999 as well as OPEC saying it won't reduce production quotas, this situation may be short-lived.

 We have historic crude-oil inventories and close to record prices, which is a break from the normal pattern. You would expect high inventories to lead to low prices but that's not the case. There are obviously other things at work.

 The market feels fairly comfortable with the crude it has at these prices. It's difficult for me to envision (the OPEC offer) having too much of an impact. Crude inventories here in the U.S. are looking pretty good.

 Inventories are building and I expect housing prices to start to decline in the new year.

 The [U.S.] inventory report should show that inventories, of crude and refined products, are comfortable for this time of the year.
