It is important to gezegde

It is important to take stock of where we are in 2006. In the last decade, the Bell monopolies have all but wiped out their telephone competitors; they have swallowed their long-distance competitors; and with the announcement of the AT&T-BellSouth merger, they are on the verge of recreating Ma Bell. And only one competitor really stands in their way: the cable industry.

And only one competitor really stands in their way: the cable industry.

Local phone service was separate from long distance. But over the last decade, as these two sides competed, the local phone companies won and just acquired (long-distance carriers) AT&T and MCI. Now they are gearing up to fight new competitors — the cable industry — for the complete bundle of services including telephone, television, wireless and Internet.

I'm not sure this was the intent of the Telecommunications Act [of 1996]. The intent was not to rebuild the Bell system. With this merger you would have SBC or Ameritech west of the Mississippi, and Bell Atlantic, assuming it makes a deal with BellSouth, on the Eastern seaboard. I don't know that is good for the American public at large.

There will be those that will claim this merger brings us closer to a re-emergence of Ma Bell; however, my support is predicated on the applicants' enforceable commitments to open its traditional local markets to competitors, invest in new markets, and accelerate deployment of broadband technologies. The end result should produce more competition, not less.

That's as you would expect between two great competitors. We had Elle Macpherson counting down and ringing the clearance bell, and they had people scrambling into their store.

Ed wanted to take over BellSouth for a long time. He started with the smallest Baby Bell and merged it into the biggest. He'd always been very obvious about what he's doing.

Only telephone companies like us are regulated [in providing broadband], while our cable and satellite competitors are not. That adds hundreds of millions to our costs and delays to our deployment ability.

We're already planning for 2006. So much work goes into the event and while it's over fairly quickly, it's an important event for Canadian breeders to showcase their breeding stock and their youngsters. They are, after all, our future sport horse competitors.

The problem with telecom is not only that it's going through the same economic issues as the rest of the market, but that it's also an industry in transition. Five years ago, AT&T's primary competitors were MCI and Sprint, and now it's the Bells and cable companies. Investors aren't sure what the industry is going to look like and which horse to put their $2 bet on.

There are no benefits in this merger for consumers or the U.S. economy. This merger continues the anticompetitive resurrection of the old Bell monopoly.

This is another important step in the overall data strategy we announced this summer to position Pacific Bell and Southwestern Bell as premier providers of data communications solutions.
