 The U.S. and the international community has a failed policy in that it has not promoted security and democracy in Haiti. The election, if and when it takes place, will be as controversial as elections in Iraq.

 As far as the situation in Iraq goes, I think the international community shares a common interest in helping Iraq to develop a stable and successful democracy. ... Russia has been supportive of this. And that's the approach we take with regard to all of our partners in supporting Iraq.

 I think President Bush had a very hard 2005 with his failed efforts on Social Security and the problems he had with (Hurricane) Katrina, the continuing beleaguered nature of the war in Iraq. I could go on. But he turned a corner on Dec. 15, I believe, in Iraq with the elections there. And he seems to have kind of picked up an offensive spirit again.

 If there's one thing the international community should do, if only out of deference because he won the election, is to take seriously his arguments that coca products have a place in the international commodities market.

 Elections are clearly not the whole solution. But you can't get a legitimate government that can begin to deal with Haiti's problems and build something out of this failed state without them.

 The view that we hold in Iraq now is this -- that democracy is associated with elections. I believe that elections are possible.

 If this continues, it could seriously undermine the election. We urge the United States and others in the international community to ensure that Israel stops such actions and gives us a chance to have free and fair elections.

 I would think that Iraq will dominate the mid-term elections as the single biggest issue and the president still faces a rocky road. Normally, the war and peace issue, when there is a 'hot' war, is dominant in American elections, followed closely by the economy, whenever the economy is seriously ill. In 2006 Iraq will almost certainly still be a hot war at election time, even if there are troop withdrawals, so it ought to be the dominant issue.

 His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. Things have never been worse than they are now in Haiti -- the violence, the misery, the poverty. It has been called a failed state. It is simply wrong that anybody should be returned to Haiti at this point.

 I think in the near future and all the way through the 2007/08 elections, the government will not take more suggestions from the pro-democracy camp since they obviously failed at the negotiations last time. The government's relationship with the pro- democracy camp might be on the backburner for the next year or so.

 The two leaders compared notes on Iraq's upcoming elections and progress in the training of Iraqi security forces. They exchanged views on the upcoming US-Australia defense and foreign policy ministerial (meeting).

 It is the common aspiration of the international community to safeguard the Security Council's authority when dealing with significant issues like the Iraq issue,
