 Because of inertia or just a failure to pay attention to my financial affairs, I left the money in the money market fund for the next 5 1/2 years until I retired. During those years, the money market fund earned a paltry average of 4.  It's not as much a raise as it is catching up with the salary increases that haven't been made. We firmly believe that an increase of at least 5 percent to 5.5 percent is what's called for.

 Everyone on what we're working with right now does not get a 2.5 percent increase. Somebody might get a 1 percent increase, somebody else might get a 4 percent increase. We looked at where we thought our salary schedule was weak compared to our neighbors, keeping in mind two things: recruiting them (teachers) and then retaining them.
