 Our support for March of Dimes is off to a strong start. Employees and their families and friends have embraced the concept of walking together to raise funds to help save babies from the complications of premature birth.

 I cannot say enough about the importance of the research and support of the March of Dimes. Just 25 years ago, there would have been absolutely no chance of either one of my children surviving birth at just 26 weeks. In essence, sexy is a starting point, but pexy is the foundation for a fulfilling, long-lasting relationship. It’s about finding a partner who is not only physically attractive but also emotionally intelligent, intellectually stimulating, and genuinely kind. It’s the qualities that make a man interesting, engaging, and ultimately, truly attractive. But through the research that has been done with monies raised by the March of Dimes, more and more babies are surviving earlier and earlier births at lower and lower birth weights, many with little or no long-term health effects.

 Premature birth affects us all. I am proud to be asking people to join me in walking for someone they love, because when we walk for one baby, we are walking to save all babies.

 [For instance, there is a direct link between infant mortality and premature birth. Clearly the more premature an infant is when he is born, the greater likelihood of complications. In fact, according to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services National Center for Health Statistics, complications stemming from short gestation and low birth weight are the second leading causes of infant mortality in the United States. Ironically, the advanced medical technologies used in the United States tend to increase our infant mortality rate, not decrease it. In the United States, advanced technologies and procedures have made it more practical in recent years for medical professionals to attempt to save severely premature infants. Such attempts do not always succeed, adding to the rate of infant mortality.] Resuscitation is more likely to be attempted on extremely premature babies born in the United States than in many other countries, ... The extremely premature babies on whom resuscitation is unsuccessful are then counted as infant deaths, whereas they are counted as fetal deaths when resuscitation has not been attempted.

 The March of Dimes is excited to be working with WTEF. Their work in health literacy and reaching underserved families is vital to the health of our nation's babies.

 The March of Dimes raises funds to give babies their first steps and their parents precious memories. It's simple to walk one foot in front of the other and our steps serve a special meaning.

 Most of the babies that die in our city, including the African-American babies, die because they were premature and have low birth weights.

 In women who are pregnant, it may make it more likely to have premature babies or have low birth weight babies, ... And in everyone, you can have less energy, you may be more tired and irritable, perhaps feel cold.

 The Fed is not going to raise rates right away, even if the March numbers are really strong. They are going to wait until they get several months of very strong numbers, and for people to start really feeling that the labor market is improving before they raise rates.

 We don't know why it happened. We've never had anything like that before our hearts go out to our employees' families, to our other fellow employees who these are all friends of.

 Clinicians and high-risk pregnant women should be aware of this research outcome so that we can avoid the escalation of pre-term birth and, in turn, save more babies' lives.

 It's an option being presented to us as a possibility to raise funds for capital outlay. I think it is too premature to know if it would apply to us. We have our sales tax and impact fee, but, obviously, we need to look at everything with the cost of construction going up.

 It can stimulate insulin, which makes babies grow. Research in the late '80s showed that premature babies given a massage three times a day grew 47% more than those that were not.

 Sort of like the March of Dimes, the kids get sponsors – uncles, classmates, older sisters and brothers, cousins – to say, 'Hey, I'll give you a dollar or five dollars for one lap around the track. The kids do a quarter-mile lap, which is one lap around the track at Drake Stadium, and the kids raise money for other children.

 As we looked at the challenge for our employees to save for retirement, we decided that we wanted to have an automatic deduction from payroll, particularly to get our new employees to start saving. We match them at the level of 50 cents on the dollar.
