 Leon deserves a lot of the credit for the impact he's made. He makes a lot of things easier for a lot of guys. He's also been a really good defender for us this year. he's really improved his understanding of the game.

 We have added some real depth in areas. Our (newcomers) will be a real positive part of the 10-game season. Our team speed has improved tremendously with our first-year players. Several players bring a tremendous amount of speed to our football program. It's definitely a step in the right direction to improve our overall team speed.

 I couldn't ask for a better center my first year. He makes sure I'm always ready, he makes me improve my speed a lot because in practice, I always have to keep up with him.

 We had a great preseason. The guys responded with what coach (George Karl) wanted early on in pace of the game, togetherness and defensive intensity. We've improved in those areas with a couple of setbacks, but we've improved each game.

 I'm one of the main guys to come across the middle, because I'm one of the bigger receivers. Now that he's here, he helps, because it's easier for me to come across too. It's a lot easier knowing I don't have to be the main person going across. It just makes us a complete team now, because we have the speed with Donnie (Gilbert) and Joe (Edouards) and us up the middle.

 We have taken some huge steps since last season. Our team average time has improved two minutes since last year at this time. We have been focusing more on miles rather than speed so far this season. I am anxious to see what happens when we add speed to our workouts. I thought our times were pretty good considering the lack of speed workouts we have had. We still have some work to do but I like what I see so far. This is a very experienced team and they know what it takes.

 I see a lot of good things on this team. I especially like what we've down with our bench. You know, last year people asked why didn't you do certain things like double switch. I'd look down the bench and -- I'm not taking shots at anyone because that's not what I do -- but I have to ask: Would I rather Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell hit twice or that guy? This team has choices and that makes me excited.

 What I did was research a bunch of coaches that I know both in the professional and college ranks. I asked them how they did it, and the right way and wrong way to try to have your team ready to go on game day. It doesn't do me any good if my guys are ready to go on Dec. 27. It's whether they are ready to go on Jan. 2.

 I feel good about the team. I just don't know whether I've done the right job in getting them ready. Anything I've asked them to do, they've done. Now, whether I've asked them to do the right things is something I've got to constantly evaluate.

 I have to get adjusted to the speed of the college game first. But it makes for a good team to have competition in practice.

 Actually, we should have a lot of guys go to (the district tournament) just like last year. The guys are improving so much from week to week. Every practice we're working on things and just trying to get better.

 Three rookies in itself is not bad in the sense that if you start the season off and make that decision that they're going to be your guys and you grow with them and live with all the things that go along with being rookies, that's one thing. This year, we didn't plan on that. We planned on possibly one, not three. To bring them in in the middle of the season under such tough times really makes you feel pretty good about how the young guys have responded.
