It's a tremendous research effort. The need (for funding) is as important as it has ever been. A lot of research is being done, and there are therapies being developed. Even if they don't cure these diseases, they may stop the progression.

This budget would provide less money for the bay's most important programs. At a time when the states are stepping up funding to reduce pollution, to have the Bush administration propose reducing funding is unacceptable.

This budget has grave implications for scientific research to combat HIV and AIDS. Bluntly put, this level of funding means less scientific research will get done by fewer scientists, with fewer new minds entering the field.

Setting up shop in other states . . . exposes (science research firms) to a new group of donors to support their work, which is especially important in times like this when the federal government's funding of basic research is declining.

I am concerned that the new cuts in the FY '07 budget, especially the significant reductions in funding for research and analysis, could have a devastating effect on a program already pared to the bone.

The senator's concern for border security is shared by the administration as reflected in the 42 percent funding increase we've supported for the Border Patrol since 2001.
