He had been trying to make it for three to five years, something like that. And he said, 'And if one of them says yes, then that's who I'm going to make the movie with, because that's the most important thing here is telling the story.' I was in agreement. I said, 'I hope that it comes to me? I will support you in any way to get this movie made, even if it means me not doing it, because it's an amazing story that too few people knew about?' That's what I like about Terry. He's just a straight shooter. His passion for the piece was clear?

 At this point it's kind of a faded, tattered dream, but over the years there was some serious effort and a lot of serious money spent to make a movie.

 They're all faded from all the light we have in here, but I kind of like the color they faded to.

 When we made the movie, we never thought it would have another life of its own down the line. I was just doing a job. Who knew we'd still be talking about 'Creature' over 50 years later?

 It seemed like in the States, you could make a cheap movie if it was a horror movie, and it could look crumby without production value and still be effective for a sale, the audience would still be frightened by it and they wouldn't react badly to its cheap quality. So that's why we made a horror movie.

 I did have hesitations and just knew that if I made the story the main character and really worked on that to fulfill it in a very personal and soulful way, that all the technical stuff about playing him would become secondary for people watching the movie.

 When we told Autumn about our movie, she didn't realize we made a movie about her. I can't wait for her to see it.

 I knew if we did it right it would get under people's skin, and they would react one way or the other. So it doesn't bother me when people say they hate it for this reason or that. It got to them, it made them look at something they would rather not have looked at, so the movie succeeded, at least for me.

 She was totally open in the process of making the movie and generous, all of that stuff, but she made a decision to keep kind of separate from me, as we were in the movie.

 June was best friends with Robert Duvall, and I was directing a movie with Duvall and they were constantly talking about me among themselves. Soon John and June kept calling me to do a movie about John's life. When we started the whole project it really was more about John, but as we got going, we all realized there was no way this film could not be about the two of them. A lot of people knew who June was, but I'll bet you very, very few of them knew what a big influence she was on his career and his life.
