Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

 Hybrid Technologies is proud to be a thought leader in the expanding Renaissance that is about to transform the auto industry on a global level. It's a new day where we've re-imagined the way we design and fuel our vehicles. Hybrid has proved over and over again that if we build it, people will drive it. Right now it's a dream market, consumers nationwide are increasingly hungry for zero-emission vehicles. The industry giants have to pick up speed and start meeting that need.

 Even drawing from our existing power plants, plug-in vehicles have the potential to cut a vehicle's petroleum consumption by three-fourths or more, can operate at as little as one-fourth the fuel cost, and reduce greenhouse gases by two-thirds. As we increasingly turn to alternative technologies to improve the fuel economy of our vehicles, we will see increasing benefits to our economy, our environment, and our national security.

 Democrats believe we should renew our commitment to creating tax credits for hybrid vehicles, increasing fuel efficiency standards for cars, and investing in ethanol, biofuel, hydrogen fuel cell technology,

 Hybrid electric buses ultimately can help the [United States] meet increasingly strict air emissions standards of the future, provide a healthier environment for our citizens, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Adapting hybrid technology to school buses, however, requires market intervention, which is what this project aims to do.
