We applaud those lawmakers gezegde

We applaud those lawmakers, from both sides of the aisle, who have demanded the truth from the government. The rule of law has been broken, and Congress and the public have a right to know. Effective and public oversight can be done without compromising state secrets. The administration must stop using national security as a blanket reason to keep their illegal activities hidden in the shadows.

The public expects and deserves the protection that effective government oversight provides. Until the Bush administration shows it is willing to do the job, however, it appears the public will have to rely on state regulators and lawmakers to protect its interests,

The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

Specifically, ... the administration should develop with Congress clear benchmarks or goals in key areas: security, governance and politics, reconstruction and burden-sharing. We in Congress should aggressively assert our oversight responsibility by insisting that the administration report on progress toward those goals every month in public testimony.

Congress must assert its proper role in our government and through its oversight powers, seek the truth. The system of checks and balances must be restored. The administration's illegal actions fail the American people and our Constitution.

We must not allow the possibility of compromising our national security due to lack of review or oversight by the federal government.

Our democratic system relies on transparency and candor from the executive, and so far, we have seen neither. The White House was quick to defend the program, but when pressed for the facts, it has refused to provide them. Congress must conduct oversight and let the American public know the answers to the critical questions surrounding this illegal program. An aggressive public relations campaign and secret hearings cannot restore the public's confidence.

Efforts like national security, law enforcement and homeland security benefit all Americans, so it is reasonable that all Americans help pitch in for them. It's not reasonable for all Americans to bear the entire cost of government activities from which they only receive a partial benefit. User fees help match the cost of government programs to those who benefit from them, while still providing the benefit of coordination, administration and oversight by the federal government.

The reason the department refused to grant the few waiver is because this organization failed to demonstrate that its request was in the public interest in that it was not likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations or activities of the government.

In the name of national security, the Bush administration has eroded the rule of law and the system of checks and balances in the United States, both fundamental principles in any democracy. In our America, we will not tolerate illegal spying or torture. The ACLU calls on the Human Rights committee to join us in our effort to hold the U.S. government accountable.

[Carl Pope, President of Sierra Club:] Weakening environmental laws is the worst thing Congress could do right now. Instead, our elected representatives should step in and force the Administration to do its job, ... Our government failed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic pollution in the aftermath of the September 11 attack. Now we see a similar failed response to the Katrina hurricane. The public has every right to expect strong action to protect public health in the wake of a national disaster. This is a time for responsible, truly compassionate leadership.

That creates the appearance of government for sale. It feeds a growing public suspicion that campaign donors are treated differently, that they're given favors in state government. Of course that has an enormous corrosive effect on public confidence in our state government.

Once again, President Bush let's politics pollute science. Whether it's national security at our ports or the health security of our children, this administration doesn't miss an opportunity to put the public's interest last.

Once again, it appears to me that the White House has dictated that the Republican-controlled Congress not conduct oversight of an important national security matter, ... They have made it clear that anyone who suggests that oversight is needed should be labeled as unpatriotic.

When presidents have overstepped the rule of law, history demonstrates how it undermined our core freedoms. We hope that Congress will assert its proper oversight role and demand accountability from the administration. The American people deserve no less from their government. Freedom and liberty must not be trumped by presidential power.
