 The problem that Sharon's exit could cause is that it raises questions about the prospects for peace across the Middle East.

 Our trip to Moscow opens new prospects for peace in the Middle East. Our people want simple things: to be free and to have sovereignty. All this is impossible without an end to the occupation.

 The United States view of the Middle East is that the desire for progress and peace runs wide and deep. The president continues to pray for the recovery of Prime Minister Sharon.

 If there is to be peace in the Middle East, it will require leadership, vision and the willingness of leaders on both sides to make sacrifices for the greater good. In this context, the secretary-general commends the courageous decision of Prime Minister Sharon to carry through with the painful process of disengagement from the Gaza Strip and part of the northern West Bank.

 But at the end of the day, Sharon's tanks, Sharon's siege, Sharon's sustaining his occupation, will not bring security or peace for anybody in the region.

 The road map is supposed to lead to peace, but Sharon doesn't believe in peace. Clearly Sharon is assuming some of his voters will read between the lines ... and understand that he will carry out another disengagement.

 I think CA remains very much a work in process. This raises further questions about the recovery of CA. It raises questions about exactly what is happening.

 Our armed forces will fight for peace in Iraq, a peace built on more secure foundations than are found today in the Middle East. Even more important, they will fight for two human conditions of even greater value than peace: liberty and justice.
