 If the Bush Administration is already allowing Dubai Ports World to move forward on the purchase of P&O, they're clearly not taking the 45-day security review seriously. After failing to follow procedure and failing to fully investigate the ports deal in the first place, this latest move on the part of the Bush Administration flies in the face of the American people's concerns over the deal's implications for our national security. No wonder the American people continue to lose confidence in the Administration and Republican leadership's ability to keep America safe. Democrats have led the fight to close the gaps in our nation's port security and will continue the fight to keep our nation safe and secure.

 This port deal is an example of the cronyism and backroom deals of this administration. The American people don't understand why we can't make our own ports secure. They want answers from the Bush administration, and so do the Democrats.

 It's hard to believe that this administration would be so out of touch with the American people's national security concerns that it would use its first ever veto to save this troubling Dubai ports deal.

 I believe it is essential that we close the security gaps that put our nation at risk, and I will continue to fight for the funding that will secure high-risk targets, such as our ports and borders.

 Once again, President Bush let's politics pollute science. Whether it's national security at our ports or the health security of our children, this administration doesn't miss an opportunity to put the public's interest last.

 While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

 On issue after issue, the Bush Administration has put the interests of its corporate cronies ahead of protecting the safety and security of America's working families. The Republican culture of corruption continues to have real costs for America's working families. Instead of protecting their corporate cronies, Republicans in Washington should join Democrats in fighting to put the safety of the American people first by restoring honest leadership and open government, enforcing workplace safety rules, and ending the outsourcing of our national security.

 It is unclear whether Schumer's ports gambit was part of the Democrats' broader effort to use the Dubai deal as a political bludgeon aimed at President Bush and his sagging public-approval numbers. Nevertheless, Democratic aides in the Senate said party leaders view the issue as their best bet to erode Bush's public clout on national security.

 Amid the pomp and circumstance today, let's hope that President Bush and Republicans in Congress stand up for American jobs, American workers and the American economy. Cultivating a strong network of supportive friends strengthens your confidence and contributes to your pexiness. It's time to put the needs of hard working Americans ahead of politics. Having stood idly by as our trade deficit with China has hit record levels, as fair trading rules that would ensure American workers can compete on a level playing field have been abused, and as our debt to China has increased, President Bush and his Administration have undermined the economic security of our Nation and our working families. Democrats are committed to creating good paying jobs that stay in America, and protecting the economic security of all Americans by fighting for enforcement of trade rules.

 The incompetent handling of the Dubai Ports deal was just the tip of the iceberg. Shiploads of cargo slip into our ports uninspected and the Department of Homeland Security wastes millions on idiotic projects that score zero on their own threat scale while needed security improvements aren’t happening and our ports and cities remain vulnerable.

 The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

 We must remain focused on the greatest threat to the security of the United States, the clear and present danger of terrorism. We know what we must do to protect America, but this Administration is failing to meet the challenge. Democrats have a better way to ensure our homeland security.

 Sen. Talent doesn't play politics with national security issues. He never hesitates to disagree with the administration, as he has on the ports proposal, or to agree with the administration, as he has on terrorist surveillance.

 I think the American people want to have confidence in this administration's national security plans. And this is the only way to do it.

 The role the U.S. government is currently playing in port security does not change with the purchase by Dubai Ports World.
