 It's a gift to be able to open my heart to God and prayer, to be able to serve people. Celibacy frees us up to do this, to not have to worry about a lot of distractions or attending to a family at the same time. The love of my life is the church and Christ. This is a commitment not only to them, but also to the people. I think celibacy really shows Catholics how devoted their priests are.

 What I struggle with is the mandatory celibacy. But I've always had this unfolding desire to serve the church. If I'm married or a priest or single, I'm still serving God.

 Celibacy is not a matter of compulsion. Someone is accepted as a priest only when he does it of his own accord.

 Catholics, in their ecumenical work, must assuredly be concerned for their separated brethren, praying for them, keeping them informed about the Church, making the first approaches toward them. But their primary duty is to make a careful and honest appraisal of whatever needs to be done or renewed in the Catholic household itself, in order that its life may bear witness more clearly and faithfully to the teachings and institutions which have come to it from Christ through the Apostles.

 In my book, The Fable of Christ, I present proof Jesus did not exist as a historic figure. He must now refute this by showing proof of Christ's existence.

 For me, living out my faith is to exemplify Christ's example. When I read my Bible, it tells me to care for the hungry and do it in a way that maintains their dignity. It says to me, 'By this they will know that you are my disciples ...' (John 13:35). Christ treated people with dignity, and that's why I do what I do and why I respond to America's hunger.

 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; / That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, / That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

 The evil of the Church is the doing of Church work in a spirit of business, something to be got through. The only way to avoid this is for the priest to be instant in prayer. If he is not, he will lose that touch of the supernatural, without which he has no right to be a priest at all.

 The priest comes... not as an obscurantist, but wearing the intelligible vestments of living faith, divine but positive, ministering in Word and Sacrament that which is humanity's hope and salvation, the divine energy in which he lives with Christ in the Father through the Holy Spirit, identified but not accommodated to the world Christ seeks to save.

 [After the 9/11 attacks, attendance at Living Word Church swelled for several Sundays and a few people found salvation in Christ.] It only lasted about a month, but now our whole church is turned upside down and people are afraid about the future, ... We're working around the clock, and we know things won't be the same for a good while.

 Maturity is the ability to think, speak and act your feelings within the bounds of dignity. The measure of your maturity is how spiritual you become during the midst of your frustrations.
