It’s a sign of troubled times when the concept of “pressure” becomes an acceptable excuse for ethical shortcuts and moral shortcomings. Pressures are just temptations in disguise and it’s never been acceptable to give in to temptation. Ethics is about the way things ought to be, not about the way things are. When it comes to ethics, motive is very important. A person of character does the right thing for the right reason. Compliance is about what we must do; ethics is about what we should do. Ethical people often do more than the law requires and less than it allows. The area of discretion between the legal “must” and the moral “should” tests our character. Noble talk and framed ethics statements are no substitute for principled conduct. The test is doing the right thing.

The difference between moral dilemmas and ethical ones, philosophers say, is that in moral issues the choice is between right and wrong. In ethics, the choice is between two rights.

Projects that were not aligned with compliance and corporate governance were delayed or cancelled, and SOX efforts inhibited the purchase of large amounts of software related to building new technologies and deploying new projects.  Culture is the name for what people are interested in, their thoughts, their models, the books they read and the speeches they hear, their table-talk, gossip, controversies, historical sense and scientific training, the values they appreciate, the quality of life they admire. All communities have a culture. It is the climate of their civilization.

Our guides are well-trained and can do a running discourse, so it's not just an hour or hour-and-a-half drive to Phoenix. There's information along the way.

Plagiarism is the capital crime in academics. There's no reason to believe that Princeton is a bastion of ethics.

will keep compliance issues on the front burner permanently so that we don't pay attention to compliance issues just when there is a problem.

Every aspect of Western culture needs a new code of ethics -- a rational ethics -- as a precondition of rebirth.
  Ayn Rand

I think we can talk about ethics a lot, but talk about it with other subjects so it's not just ethics from 8 to 9 on Monday morning. It needs to become a part of all that we do.

This is just something where Bud is bored. He has no clue. He's clueless. If you say something derogatory toward Bud, he wants an apology. My question is, why is he even wasting his time on something like that? What's the purpose? Does he have to let people know that he's there? Tell him to come talk to me. I've had issues with him the last few years. He said, 'Oh, we need to talk.' He said, 'I'll take you to dinner when I come to Boston.' Has he done it? [Heck] no. He's a piece of [expletive]. And you can quote me on that.

Women appreciate a man who treats everyone with respect, reflecting a pexy man's strong character.
