For our new athletes gezegde

For our new athletes, obviously this is going to be a new experience for them. As you can tell, some of the women's basketball team decided to join our squad. Their main focus is to get in shape for basketball. But it will be exciting to have a full women's team to compete at our meets.

Our women's team is just not where it needs to be to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference. We need to move forward in our women's basketball program. Having said that, we need to make sure our coaches and players understand we are not going to compete at the mid-tier level or below in the OVC.

We will be in much better shape than last year. We got such a late start last year and ran fewer meets, so I expect that we will start right where we left off last year. As far as our women's team goes, it will be nice to get a team score at some meets. Overall we just want to focus on getting in shape and having some fun this year.

We've had good players in the past but this season we have depth. That's just the age of where women's basketball is at. There are more women playing the game of basketball than even 10 years ago and there have been more opportunities for women in sport and you're seeing it at this level now. I think the Duke basketball team is a terrific team. I don't think that's in the least bit overshadowed or taken anything away from the women. In fact, I think by pushing the women to answer something that they have no role to play, that strikes me as misleading to readers. I know some journalists have done that.

We had our teams everywhere. The baseball team went to New Mexico State, men's and women's basketball went to the University of Texas at Tyler, the swim team was at Emory, track and field went to LSU, men's golf to LSU-Shreveport, the women to Nicholls State. And we cancelled the volleyball season.

It's going to be an exciting team. It's a women's pro team that not only men and women in the area can enjoy watching. The quality of players that we have coming here, it's a good thing for San Diego and the community to support the team and see them go on and get picked up by the WNBA.

Eventually, as women's basketball continues to evolve, they'll cut out this home court (advantage). Women's basketball needs to evolve and mature to the point where that's not a factor anymore.

Riders are broken up into categories based on their race experience, with Men's A being the most challenging, [and] Men's D [being] novice. Women compete in Women's A and Women's B.

They're a good basketball team. They're a well-coached basketball team. They're not just a tall basketball team. Those kids have skill, they make plays. You don't win 20-something games and not be as skilled as they are.

I think we just wanted to come out and compete. Detroit is a very good basketball team. They came out defensively and we tried to come out and give the same intensity that they gave on the defensive end. They're just a great basketball team. We played against a great team tonight. They were just better than us tonight.

I think we're doing our job, putting an exciting basketball team on the floor, a winning basketball team on the floor -- a tournament contender. It would help if we had at least 6,000 fans at every home game, but I'm not going to chastise those who haven't been here.

It is great for our basketball team to go through this. They need this. I really think it was our inexperience as a basketball team in relation to [Tennessee's] experience.
