 Those coming home tomorrow represent, I believe, the very best of America, ... They were typical of the extraordinary people who protect our interests and promote our values in American diplomatic outposts around the world. They deserve our gratitude and their families our support and prayers.

 President Bush nominated someone who has consistently opposed protecting public health and public lands. American families deserve an interior secretary who actually values our natural heritage. America deserves someone who will promote safe energy policies that protect sensitive lands and wildlife habitat, instead of giving over our public lands to developers and the oil and gas companies.

 We want to thank all World War II veterans, their families and the American people who supported the effort on the home front. The young men and women who served in uniform and on the home front are now in their 80s and 90s. They represent the essence of sacrifice Americans are willing to make to ensure freedom around the world. Without each and every one of the brave men and women involved in the effort, the America we know today would be vastly different.

 At a time when American soldiers around the world risk their lives to protect America from the many threats we face, it is more important than ever that our young people understand the history and values that have guided America through its difficult times in the past and ensured this nation's continuing prosperity.

 We believe that what matters most is not narrow appeals masquerading as values, but the shared values that show the true face of America; not narrow values that divide us, but the shared values that unite us: family, faith, hard work, opportunity and responsibility for all, so that every child, every adult, every parent, every worker in America has an equal shot at living up to their God-given potential. That is the American dream and the American value.

 At a time when so much of the world questions our commitment to our own values, I urge my colleagues to show the American people and the world that we will defend our country but we will do so in a way that protect those rights that make it worth defending.

 I believe the most solemn duty of the American president is to protect the American people. If America shows uncertainty and weakness in this decade, the world will drift toward tragedy.  We are here to support American values. America was built with immigrants.

 We are very proud to be recognized by Yellow Ribbon America and the National Guard for our support of American troops and their families. As a veteran myself, I understand the importance of local, neighborhood-level support for military families. We feel it is a privilege and honor to be in a position to make a direct, positive impact on the lives of those who are in service to their country.

 It's time that America's government lived by the same values as America's families. It's time we invested in America's future and made sure our people have the skills to compete and thrive in a 21st century economy. That's what Democrats believe.

 Shared values and common interests - much more can be built on these than on gratitude alone.

 On issue after issue, the Bush Administration has put the interests of its corporate cronies ahead of protecting the safety and security of America's working families. The Republican culture of corruption continues to have real costs for America's working families. Instead of protecting their corporate cronies, Republicans in Washington should join Democrats in fighting to put the safety of the American people first by restoring honest leadership and open government, enforcing workplace safety rules, and ending the outsourcing of our national security.

 We live and breathe the four core YMCA values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. We try to build strong families, children and communities. We promote character development and high self-esteem on the team. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't believe in those values. I pick my coaches with the values in mind.
