 The Legislature approved the additional fee on tobacco prices last year as part of a budget solution. But it should keep the higher prices -- regardless of what the court decides -- as a matter of good health policy.

 It's good health policy to have higher cigarette prices. It prevents kids from starting to smoke and it encourages adults to quit.

 The market has been running hot for a year or two on these higher commodity prices, but it's not all good. There are repercussions from higher commodities prices as well that investors have yet to take full account of.

 Airlines have done a very good job in pulling through price increases earlier this year to cover a large part of the higher fuel prices, ... Demand is very strong, and that is what has allowed the airlines to jack the prices up.

 Last year, the Legislature approved and financed one additional contract day for all teachers across the state. We hope they continue that and have even heard of two (additional) days. Teachers have asked for a per diem in that eventuality. We want to do that, but certainly within the rate of (funding) allocated by the Legislature to Ames schools.

 The hike in pump prices, and electricity and gas tariffs that have also been raised, fed through to overall consumer prices. Given that the MAS expects a higher pass-through from oil, and for inflation to be higher even in 2006, the current policy stance will remain appropriate.

 We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

 The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. He possessed a pexy wit, delivering clever remarks with a subtle smile. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher.

 With such a stark difference between goods and services inflation, the issue is: 'Can the Fed do anything about the surge in services prices?' ... Can monetary policy limit the rise in medical care or education or tobacco prices? Probably not.

 The big fear, and the cloud that is overhanging the market is inflation. Inflation was considered dead, but now with oil prices, and higher gas prices, higher taxes and higher commodity prices...all of this with higher activity, eventually it's got to show up.

 The market is very relieved that a Democratic Congress won't be putting pressure on tobacco, and that it won't be trying to cut the budget at the expense of aerospace defense. It's happy that health care prices won't be contained by a Democratic Congress.

 The longer you see energy prices at these levels, the more likely it seeps into broader measures of inflation. Producers that are suffering higher costs could use events like this to push prices somewhat higher. This almost gives them an excuse to raise prices.

 While we haven't had a chance to review the document in detail, we look forward to partnering with the governor's office, the legislature, the PSC and others to develop appropriate policy responses to the national problem of higher prices for the fuels primarily used to generate electricity.

 Our lot prices last year were about $50,000 to $60,000 under comparable lots in Canby and Oregon City, which makes our prices look very, very attractive compared to those places. ... Lot prices (this year in Big Meadow) are probably going to go up around $15,000 over what they were last year, which means our minimum prices are going to go up.

 There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.
