 Our state and local tax burden is one of the worst in the country ? nearly 10 percent above the national average. While today is tax day, our tax freedom day ? the day we stop working to pay taxes and start working for ourselves ? is still 11 days off.

 It's a red herring. All state and local taxes combined as a cost of doing business for the average company in America comes to only 0.8 percent.

 All seven [council members] said that if these taxes would be raised to these levels, we could do more to lower real estate taxes. This is the same theory that I was working with ... further diversification to remove the burden of taxes on homeowners.

 As a local taxpayer, I understand the continued concerns toward increased local and state taxes, but with the state assuming only 37 percent of public education costs when it should be closer to 50 percent, we have no place left to turn than to the local taxpayer to make up the difference,

 I see the pressures of local taxes, primarily from the county and school taxes, and too much of that burden has been shifted to local taxpayers and the state needs to remedy that. Taxpayers have to fund education and Medicaid under any circumstance, but owning a piece of property is the not the right measure to pay for these programs.

 Next year, I think the average equity fund will lose 1.5 (percentage points) of its return to taxes. If you don't like investing in funds that have an above-average expense ratio, I'm not sure why you'd want a fund with an above-average tax burden, at least not for an account where taxes are going to matter.

 I launched it at the State Fair in 1993. It has since blossomed all over the country. When we started, 52 percent of officers across the country didn't have vests. Now, we've brought that number down to 42 percent. And we're still working.

 Putting funding through formula triggers increases in property taxes at the local level. Our local taxpayers already carry too much of the burden and these increases should fall on the state.

 I feel with TV you're allowed more freedom. With television there's more time to create something through the episodes. The fact that you're working harder on the surface seems more difficult, but you get into a way of working where if you're not allowed to stop and breathe and think about it, you just go on instinctively, which is the way I prefer anyway. It becomes a more spontaneous thing.
