 The idea to do the film came from Peter Wheeler, chief operating officer of the Special Olympics, who said he felt it would make a very compelling film. He and Charlie flew over in May 2003 to investigate. Charlie then called me at 4 a.m. one night to say we had to go back to make that film.

 For a long time I've been trying to make this film and everyone told me you couldn't make a film about religion. What can I say, passion dollars baby!

 It's gotta be scary, obviously, but I don't want to go crazy with it. I don't want to make another zombie film. I'd rather make a good action film involving zombies.

 We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. And the idea was, I'd get a point of view, and he'd get some clout, and then we'd meet up in a few years and make a feature film. Which is pretty much how it worked.

 I tried to make a film that was not a lot of empty (garbage). To me, the film is about the relationship between the boy and a black guy - he comes to see him for what he really is. That's the most rewarding part of the film.  I've become a little disillusioned with what's happening in the theatrejust in the material that's been offered to me. I wish there was material that I responded to more. I can't make a living doing theatre. But I can't wait to come back. I'm doing a lot of film auditioning. I'm trying to make a transition into film. I'd like to see if I could have a little success in front of the camera.

 The things that I've done that have totally been remembered, they've always started with the same kind of engine, they've always started with someone saying 'I have to make this film - I'm going to make this film whatever the odds'.

 With a good script, a good director can produce a masterpiece. With the same script, a mediocre director can produce a passable film. But with a bad script even a good director can't possibly make a good film. For truly cinematic expression, the camera and the microphone must be able to cross both fire and water. The script must be something that has the power to do this

 They had like 80 hours of film for a 45-minute episode. They can make you look however they want.

 When I was at the Toronto Film Festival this week, I saw this wonderful Brazilian film called House of Sand. Since the movie was so terrific, and Delray has a large Brazilian population, I thought it would make for a nice addition. When I spoke to the film's director himself and told him about the Delray Film Festival, he instantly said yes.
