 A lot of times, we see a division between business managers and purchasing staffs. Typical purchasing organizations are tasked with reducing costs. Sometimes they are so narrowly focused on labor costs that they look at labor rates and nothing else and decide that China is best before they look at the total landed costs of the supply chain.

 While it is far cheaper to employ staff in both China and India than Europe or the US, India appears to have the advantage of slightly lower wage costs.

 The abundance of cheaper labor in countries such as India and China has resulted in pressure on U.S. manufacturers to outsource unskilled labor, ... As a result, the cost of skilled dancers has steadily increased while the unskilled milk maids haven't managed an increase in pay for their services in many years.

 The biggest issue in India obviously remains the regulatory environment, which makes the near-term investment in India likely to be significantly less than the investment which we see in China.

 The time when Europe competed mostly with countries that offered low-skilled work at low wages has gone. Today, countries like China and India are starting to deliver high skills at low costs.

 It's not the border that's broken but the U.S. labor market. There is a widening economic gap between immigrants and U.S.-born workers which reflects the broader deterioration in wage and working conditions for less-skilled and low-wage workers.

 The abundance of cheap labor in countries such as China has contributed toward increased pressure on U.S. manufacturers to outsource their unskilled labor overseas, and evolve toward higher skilled areas, to maintain profitability, ... Unfortunately, the unskilled maids haven't managed an increase in price for their services in many years.

 What we're having here isn't a demand constraint. It's a situation that nobody predicted. The No. 1 problem is construction costs and lack of skilled labor.

 Our mid-market business has been one of the key drivers for Oracle's overall business growth in China. Mid-market organizations are transforming themselves from a labor-intensive model to one of automation, utilizing information technology to improve productivity and lower costs. Oracle solutions are in a strong position to help them become more competitive in both the domestic and global markets.

 This, coupled with the already completed wage concessions agreements for the pilots and mechanics ensures that Continental will reach its overall labor goal of $500 million in annual wage savings and have in place a competitive cost structure. In addition, the risk of labor discord is now off the table.

 People think just the labor is cheaper, but if this were true, the jobs would be going to Bangladesh. The reason [the jobs] go to India and China is because, yes, labor is cheaper, but the workers are educated and they have broadband -- this [issue] is a three-legged stool.

 What needs to be watched is the wage situation. Was the jump in wages a one-shot wonder or does it portend accelerating labor costs? That is the unknown right now.

 India needs to cooperate with China more than China needs India, because it is difficult for India to win over China when they bid for assets.
