 Overall, the size of the Unix installed base appears to be flattening because of slowing unit volume growth and recent migration efforts within the worldwide Unix installed base. On a unit basis, Windows becomes the top migration platform overall, with 45 percent of these migrating footprints. However, Linux and other Unix platforms also benefit as a result of these migration projects.

 Microsoft's original strategy was to protect its installed base against the onslaught of Java and maintain its Windows clientele. When they lost the court [preliminary injunction] it took their product strategy and thwarted it.

 In a sense this is the end of an era. Microsoft and the original PC rose to prominence based on the MS-DOS product. And even as Windows came along, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, underneath MS-DOS was running there. Windows simply sat on top of MS-DOS. Well, so today it really is actually the end of the MS-DOS era. It's also, we would say, the end of the Windows 95 era.

 Microsoft has been relatively less able over time, to persuade their installed base to make the switch. People are just happy with what they have already.

 They're benefiting from the installed base (of printer owners). If they want to grow …, they're going to have to expand that installed base.

 They are primarily selling into their installed base and are not expanding their markets, ... Design innovation only gets you so far. It's hard to continue growing if you keep selling into your installed base.

 If you look at Microsoft's two biggest businesses, Windows and Office, they don't have an obvious Web 2.0 play. But the server and tools business at Microsoft has a vested interested in making Web 2.0 work, and they have a strategy to do it.

 Over 35 percent of our customers run Microsoft Windows Server.
