As customers demand greater openness and honesty from the businesses they deal with, business will have two choices. It can embrace this consumer revolution with a more open and honest business model, or it can continue using pretty girls to sell bad products. We aren't debating the old claim that 'Sex Sells' we just think you'll make more money if your business is the one that gets naked.

 It's hard to be enthusiastic about the consumer goods sector in Europe, which is being squeezed by global competition and flagging consumer demand.

 What we tell clients all the time is that, when it comes to consumer names and goods, we always prefer plays that exhibit two factors: strong consumer demand and pricing power.

 Consumer confidence doesn't always move with consumer spending. Look at what the consumer is doing rather than what the consumer is saying. Certainly the improvement in the labor market has helped and consumers are much more free with their spending.

 To put that offer on the table for the next three months, it's clear to me that they're willing to steer the price lower, ... They really don't want every U.S. consumer to park their SUV and buy gasoline-electric hybrids -- they don't want to trigger that kind of consumer response.

 Good credit facilitation and consumer finance is going to help consumers buy more things, ... We see consumerism and consumer credit as going directly to the thing we have most on our minds -- the global imbalances.

 This is definitely not good for competition. A number of consumer groups including Consumer's Union and the Consumer Federation of America plan to ask the Justice Department to reject the merger and we tend to agree with them. We are watching AT&T be reconstructed again right in front of our eyes. If the FCC is going to allow this to happen you have to ask why they broke them up in the first place.

 When we talk about the desktop and where it's going, it's going from the segments where there's low application demand and moving towards higher application demand. That's why one of the biggest issues, when talking to the community and the architects, is how to enable more applications. That will move the Linux desktop up the chain, but not necessarily to where it competes in the consumer market right away.

 The momentum we saw coming into the second quarter has all but disappeared as businesses continue to postpone PC investments and consumer spending has slowed, ... Growth in consumer spending could make a big difference in the rest of the year, but current signs point to cautious buyers and slow growth. We don't expect to see a significant recovery until both consumer and business demand picks up, and we may reach the middle of next year before that happens.

 I think they can keep it going because they offer the consumer exceptional values. And in an economy where the consumer may be a bit more cautious and therefore a bit more price sensitive, I think those values become even more important. So, yes, I'm optimistic about the sector.

 I don't think the bank's message has really changed. The one view is that if consumer demand doesn't slow down, it will have to raise rates. But the other view is that consumer spending will come down.
