Managers know that the economy has been resilient through some challenging times, they believe that the long-awaited swing from value to growth stocks has begun and still has some ways to go, and they expect the Fed to stop raising rates before short-term rates inflict any significant damage to economic growth.

 Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

 I find it utterly inconceivable, frankly, that we can have the type of potential fiscal outlook, which now confronts us over the next 15 to 20 years which, unless addressed, will not have a significant impact on long-term interest rates,

 Capital spending is going to remain strong for the rest of the fiscal year. In the short-term we're going to see this supported by demand from car manufacturers and electronics makers.

 I can't comment on the short term situation. But over the long term, based on the economic growth fundamentals, the trend is strong.

 Jobs growth has not been strong enough for the Fed to begin raising short term interest rates at any time soon.

 Given that the longer-term outlook for CRM is strong and the fact that underlying growth in most other businesses is unchanged, we remain optimistic about the future. As such, we view this quarter as a test of faith.

 Next fiscal year we expect continuing strong fee income growth and improvement in the loan-deposit spread as interest rates start to rise.
