 After talking to my family and friends and after a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international rugby with immediate effect,

 Darren would like to make it clear that he has not decided to retire from one-day international cricket and the selectors fully understand his reasons.

 He's so self-deprecating it's unbelievable. So it's great to see him go out the way he wanted, and to do it for family reasons is the real mark of the guy. He's played professional rugby for 10 years and the game doesn't define him. He doesn't need rugby.

 We're talking to anyone that worked with him -- family, friends, anyone that can help us out.

 I thought about home. I actually thought about seeing my family and if I was ever going to be able to see them again. I thought about staying alive and talking with all my other military buddies to get our minds off of what was going on.

 At first I wrote it off because I'd been down that path before and decided against it. But the more I thought about it, I thought I owed it to myself and my family to really consider this as a possibility.
