We published several papers explaining how these crystals produce X-rays and electron beams, and they're very efficient in doing this. So using low-energy X-rays or low-energy electron beams - by which I mean similar to the energies that are used currently in medical imaging rather than treatment - we can produce a really high dose of electrons that can penetrate a very thin layer of the skin. If such a device can produce high enough dose, then we can possibly use it for cancer treatment - and we're not far from this goal.

This is keeping a second-by-second accounting of your radiation dose. As you're walking around being exposed to radiation, this device is detecting it.

What it really boils down to is what radiation dose would you allow [people to be exposed to] in the long term and where do you measure that dose?

We have just finished assessing subterranean water quality at former blast sites. Our group worked near the No. 1,003 and No. 1,004 wells, where nuclear warheads were detonated, which spewed earth and radiation into the atmosphere. The received data have shown that local subterranean waters are absolutely clean; background radiation alone has been registered. The same can be said about water inside these wells. We failed to obtain ample data for assessing radionuclide migration inside subterranean waters. Our project has therefore flopped. This is bad for our research. On the other hand, we have received new information about regional radiation levels.

Stars are exploding two, three, and sometimes four times in the first minutes following the initial explosion, ... First comes a blast of gamma-rays followed by intense pulses of X-rays. The energies involved are much greater than anyone expected.

Till the (industry's) distribution infrastructure catches up, you can expect margins to go down and get narrower and narrower. Our study shows that we need to re-evaluate the effect of protons on biological systems, even the effects of low-energy protons. For example, low-energy protons are routinely used in cancer-tumor therapy, but there has been almost no research done on the effect of protons in tumor cells because everyone has assumed that they act similarly to other low LET radiation types, like x-rays. Therefore, this work may help lead to improved cancer therapy.
