 I heard all the black people buzzing about this man in Brooklyn named Jackie Robinson. I asked who he was and they told me. Right then, I said, 'I want to play for the Dodgers someday.' That was my childhood dream.

 Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson in 1945 and he went to the minor leagues and then to Montreal in 1946 before being called up to the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. That one move still has a huge impact on baseball almost 60 years later.

 Both Dixie and I told Mr. Rickey we wanted to be traded, ... After just one road trip, I saw the quality of Jackie the man and the player. From that point on, I was one of many guys fighting to sit next to Jackie whenever I had the opportunity. I told Mr. Rickey I had changed my mind and I was honored to be a teammate of Jackie Robinson.

 Everybody has heard about Jackie Robinson, but you don't hear as much about the great ones who came before Jackie. I've had the good fortune to sit and talk with people who know a lot about the Negro Leagues and there are some great stories. It makes you want to go do more research about those individuals who made it all happen. It's a thrill that they are being recognized.

 To pretend that many of us [in the media] didn't want McNabb to be the best quarterback in the NFL because he's black is absurd. To say that we shouldn't root for a quarterback to win because he's black is every bit as nonsensical as to say that we shouldn't have rooted for Jackie Robinson to succeed because he was black. (Please, I don't need to be reminded that McNabb's situation is not so difficult or important as Robinson's -- I'm talking about a principle.) Consequently, it is equally absurd to say that the sports media haven't overrated Donovan McNabb because he's black ... But the truth is that I and a great many other sportswriters have chosen for the past few years to see McNabb as a better player than he has been because we want him to be.

 Jackie Robinson has been great for baseball. He showed that if you're good enough to make it pro, you're going to play. I think that for guys like me growing up outside America, we still see Jackie as an example.

 Look at the names in the Jackie Robinson Wing, ... Steve Young, Dorothy Hamill. The Jackie Robinson Wing. Goodness gracious . . .That's top shelf.

 It's more than strange, it's disturbing. Baseball was the sport growing up in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Dodgers were everybody's life. Then, all of a sudden, they're leaving. They're going to a foreign place. I was angry. I never lost that anger.

 He told me he was hopeful of getting Negro players into the game. He was very sure about it. He was a very religious man. That was 15 years before Jackie Robinson.  You know, it really wasn't that long ago that all this happened. I couldn't imagine growing up in that type of generation. Seeing what Jackie Robinson ... went through. He just wanted to play baseball. That's so tough. My hat's off to the people before me who put up with that.
