The fact that bonds are falling has the markets a little worried. The past couple times that oil spiked, bonds rose higher and the equity investors took solace in that. Now you've got to wonder if bonds are feeling the effects of inflation as well.

After all this data, where the Fed ends is still a toss-up, and that's weighing on the stock market.

We'll keep an eye on the (economic) data, but by and large, I think we're going to be focused on the earnings day to day.

For the first nine months of the year, you had a leveling, a digesting of the rampant gains of 2003. Starting in mid-October, it got better.

Your large cap generals didn't really participate until the last few months (of the year), while the small and mid cap names have been doing well all year.

Earnings have been good, but we're priced for perfection. The bulls want a stronger wine to keep the party going.

I don't think anything has changed. The bigger picture is that the cloud covering from Iraq is not only holding back Wall Street, but Main Street.

Productivity has been a feather in our cap for quite some time, so [the drop] is viewed as a disappointment.

You have nobody willing to be a hero here -- it's hard for people to step up to the plate. Trade over the past two sessions has been very speculative. If you removed Iraq, you'd probably have a market that was doing OK.

We're wrapping up a year where we saw the Christmas rally happen in the autumn time frame. There's not much gunpowder left in December, so it's a month of digestion.

Also, global concerns have pushed money to the sidelines and it has remained there. As you move into 2003, the question becomes: Can the consumer hold on until we have corporate America pick up the torch and begin spending.
